When I google(d) for mine, I found many others; 'hotwire' is another one giving good rates. My question is how safe (as all information, including credit card info is required to be put in there) is to use any 'not so well known' on-line ticket selling site; or is it fine to buy from ANY?

What makes you say that Hotwire is not a well known travel site?
It's almost as popular as Travelocity, Expedia etc.
Only feature difference with Hotwire is that they won't show you airline name until you purchase.
