I flew Austrian Air in the month of April '05. The route is Delhi>Vienna>Toronto @ 25,000 inclusive of all taxes. I landed in TO half hour before the scheduled arrival time. Service is good, but Vienna airport is small with not many facilities.

Thanx

Please let me know some more details related with the baggage allowance, no. of baggage, size of baggage, handbaggage, etc.which would be allowed by Austrian air. We are 5 family members. How many bagggages and total weight we can carry as per the Austrian air norms? Can we carry the cardboard cartons for utencils/general items(except clothes). Your advice would be a great help for our planning to fly with Austrian air.

Thanks

Austrian Air is offering Rs.20000 + 4000 airport tax from Delhi, which is cheaper than Lufthansa.

That's quite cheap!!! But check with someone who has flown recently about the service. Not that I have heard anything negative, but such low fares always bother me.:p

What is the meaning of 5 hour break/halt ?What all formalities we have to do during the break, related with baggage, checkin ,mobility etc. Please advise.

You do not have to do anything about your luggage. You can check-in for both the sectors at Delhi. Mobility - what does that mean. If you mean going out of the airport, you cannot, unless you have a valid visa for Austria. Otherwise you are free to move around in the transit area. Enjoy the hospitality of the airport!!!:)

Mostly, all the facilities are there, so don't bother. Be sure to carry with you light food items such as cakes, pastries, biscuits so that you don't have to buy them in the airport , which is very expensive. You can also take extra food items given in the aircraft during your flight from Delhi>Vienna, and use them during your transit wait period. Luggage rules are same as all transatlantic flights. Each individual can carry 32kgx2 pc.(checked-in baggage) + 8kg as cabin baggage. If the bags are 1-2 kg overweight, that's OK. I am not sure about the cartons; better check with the airlines directly. Besides the cabin baggage, keep plastic bags handy (the kind of bags that are given from the shops when you buy garments) so that you can dump extra water bottles/food given in the aircraft. And yes, never feel shy to ask for more food/water in the aircraft. After all, you are paying for it.........;)

I hope this helps.

Thanx

Hi

Incase you havent already booked your tickets, i would vouch for Austrian airlines, their service is good (till some desis make an ass out of themselves gobbling extras just because its free and asking for sealed wine bottles to take with them or even when some come out of the washroom with paper towels stuffed in their pockets), and the stopver at Vienna isnt a hassle either. Its a relatively small airport with all facilities you would need for the halt. A coffee and a sandwich is a dollar each, which doesnt make it expensive really, so you may really not need to snatch things off the flight.
Your luggage stays checked in for a through transfer so you dont have to do anything about it.
Only problem would be that when you land at Toronto, you would get pushed aside by a lot of desi bhaialog all running to the immigration counter. That wont change anywhere the worldover i guess.
I would say you go ahead without any worries about the airline. They screen excellent inflight movies for kids.
Sorry i didnt check this thread earlier else i would have replied earlier. Hope it helps.
If you wish you can pm me when you land......kinda gets overwhelming if you are alone. Talk to you
Take care

hi,
My family(2 of us plus my less than 2 year old daughter) is flying with Lufthansa next week. My criteria for choosing this airline was whether it was "children-friendly". A lot of friends and our travel agent in chennai recommended lufthansa. I guess Austrian Air sounds good based on the experience of fellow desis. However I would request u to check that in greater detail especially if u r having small kids.

Desis, I will be joining u all next friday....Wish me luck...

Sunflower,
Any flight is good. In your case one stop over should be the criteria rather than the airline. I am not saying that Lufthansa is not good but you could have tried Air France or Air India. All airlines almost offer the same services. If you have costly goods in your baggage then Lufthansa is more dependable. Lufthansa fares are quite high and the agent recommends that b'cos of his comission or b'cos of his good links with that airline.
All the best. Hope that you set your foot in the GTA soon.
Have you arranged your room/ lodging/ conveyance from the airport through the classifieds of this forum. some of the advertisers offer you the best deals that you can avail as desi's. Chinese operators are a bit more cheaper but then being with a desi can sure make you feel at home in Canada.

hi,
Right...but we were recommended against Air France coz they havea code sharing flight. anyzwayz it boils down to a person's personal criteria.

As for transport from the airport, we have a relative in toronto. i hope they will us help out.

thanx again.
