Hello!
Good discussion.
Resumes are important but they are not to be sole factor in deciding the employee.
Let me give you an example :
Our office was looking for Architectural Technologists and so many people applied. Our office does only residences and so naturally the boss had instructed to the receptionist (non technical person) to look for people who claimed to have residential experience (in canada or abroad). So out of a hunderd resumes, she threw away resumes which did not have the words " Residences or housing" in it. So , many good resumes went to the waste paper basket. She finally had 6 in her desk. i went and saw it after everyone had left. In that, she had picked one which caught my attention.
A lady was the owner of that resume. It read :
"A degree in Architecture-Lebanon"
"10 years of experience-Labanon, UAE etc.."
"past job : working in customer care-in canada"
"Present job: Working in a daycare taking care of infants-in canada"
Now who in their right minds would write something like this and how do you expect an employer to emply people like this. So you need to use your brains. You will not be hired even if you are a gora or a desi.
Verdict-> as far as i know, there are lots of jobs available in the market but "Goras" still donot know how desi's or immigrants work. Canadian Goras think that immigrants are coming from some country where they donot even use computers. I think that is why many people donot get jobs.
TK.
Sidenote : Even in my office, there are still 3 or 4 jobs available for architectural technologist and they are waiting to fill it for 2 years now. Gora's donot come for $10 / hour salary (and the gora's that came did not know anything even with Canadian Architectural degree) and our office has had terrible experiences with immigrants without canadian experience (so they are now not hiring immigrants without Canadian Housing experience-Note that except the receptionist all our office staff and boss are immigrants. Major ethinicity is Desi and chinese. Chinese donot know english but since architecture is about drawings they were hired. some are good . some are bad). The basic problem with our employer is that he does not want to teach immigrants housing. It might take just 1 day. But he expects them to start all alone and then after a week, if he is not please he fires them. In my experience, Canadian Goras donot like to be taught + they canot do anything on their own too. So they get fired.
Disclaimer : this is just my experience. I am not generalising. Thanks for understanding . I am a Candian Citizen too.

Or some place where English is unheard of! I am taking this discussion a bit off the track but allow me give my example. We went to our family doctor for the first meeting after she/he agreed to take us as his/her patients. He asked if our kid was immunized? We had carried the certificate our doctor back home had given and told the doctor about it and was just about the remove it from the file when she/he asked me, the very words – ‘ but will that be in English? ‘ Those words still ring in my ears. And when he/she saw it the doctor acknowledged that yes indeed it is in English! Such is the level of ignorance. And my experience as a doctor – patient would take another page. So lets leave it for the moment.

When i went to a dentist a year or so ago , the hyginist prepared me to have my teeth cleaned (insurance). She was a gora candian. And she told me "you may not have seen this machine which cleans your teeth before but it will do a nice job". I laughed within me (one reason being i had already opened my mouth for her to do the cleaning).
Such ignorance.

Are you serious? Is this what happens to your resume? Imagine the time and effort someone has put into it and only to be thrown in the bin by a totally unqualified person. But on the other hand how does this boss of yours expect to recruit good employees if he has this method of screening?

Hi!
I am serious. but i am only telling what happened in MY OFFICE. It may be different for various offices.

Sidenote : Frankly , the employer does not care. He does not care if the resume if from Africans, Arabs, Chinese, Philipinoes, Desi's etc... He puts them all in the same boat -> coming from a country where they maynot have Architects/ architecture colleges/concept of architecture at all. He does not know nor care which are the best architecture univ. in the world. So he takes a gamble. Maybe if that individual has worked in Housing / Residences maybe it is easier for him to learn Canadian housing. So the instruction to the receptionist.
Sidennote 2 : For 2 years i was patient. Then i found that he was hiring people who did not know the work at all. so i recommended 2 desi's and both of them were hired. I tried to bring 2 more desi's (from CD forum) but they were rejected b'cos they did not have Canadian Housing experience.

Hello!
I sent Babail's article to an indian immigrant in Australia and this is what he replied. He was an architect but now works as a manager in Coca Cola. He is repeatedly asking me to come to sydney as there are lots of managerial type of jobs and that jobs are really easy to comeby.
His mail :
TK,
There are more crying emails floating around in these countries, no exception
over here. At some point of time resumes needs to be changed and lied. There
is no option.
Cheers
Pree

Babail,
People from other countries definitely know how to make resumes. The concept of Canadian resume is more for people who don't know English properly or are not comfortable with making resumes. The same people are hired by many multi-national companies in different countries but it seems that Canada is way above all. If the system in Canada changes, it will be good for Canada. Having said that, I do see people who are doing well in Canada inspite of the system.
A good resume alone is however not a substitute for skills, experience & attitude. I had a guy whom I had recruited due to excellent resume & good soft skills but he turned out to be one of the laziest guys I have ever seen.
I had got my resume appraised by various agencies here & yet couldn't get a proper job. I guess something was seriously wrong with me !!!
Morning rain, you have been contributing positively to the forum. Keep up the good work !! A few people have said that I am negative on this forum but I write what I have experienced & what I feel. So don't worry.
Rgds.
