I crossed the border several times over the last 2 months or so and have found without fail that the Lewiston crossing is the worst in terms of delays. Fort Erie and the Rainbow bridge have been much better. I used all three at least 4-5 times each.

I have learnt in the future to try avoiding the Lewsiton crossing if at all possible.
And yes, almost as a general rule, I have also found that the US officers ask fewer questions than the Canadian ones..

I have crossed to Buffalo twice (peace bridge both times) and this is what the US officers ask me (apart from other questions):
What is your country of birth?
Once i say India, they are a bit relived and since they see me as a Christian, there is no more much trouble given. Just imagine if i was a Muslim from an Arab country/pak.,/Egypt/Palestine?
That is why i said before . Since i have a fancy anglo name (not my choice), I am given less trouble at the border.

It is not about losing confidence in Canada.

It is all about getting more free sweets back in India :p

P.S. - I am trying hard these days not to post any postings on CD, but sometimes, not being able to react to some of the post is tougher than being celibate!!!!!!!!!!

On the opposite experience read this. Couple of years ago a Canadian Citizen Goan lady was travelling to Toronto via Chicago and she was detained for about three days just because her last name was Portuguese (I think Gomez) The officers weren't convinced that there are tons of Gomez in India. They argued that she had a fake passport made in Sri Lanka.

So having a desi face and anglo name may put you in trouble sometimes.

When I suggested, Don't lose confidence, Be truthful and don't hide anything. It was obviously regarding the situation original poster faced at the border with immigration agents.

I don't understand where did meghal get the idea, "It is not about losing confidence in Canada."

I guess this is why students are encouraged to work on their comprehension skills in schools. Unless it was an intentional spin from poster.

The spin was a comment on the lengths some people go to acquire 'free' stuff...e.g cookies, sweets, toilet paper etc. It was'nt aimed at you. We old timers on CD speak in tongues :)
