I think you don't even need your passport.
All you need is your birth certificate.
I know lots of my colleagues in the US crossed at Niagara Falls simply by showing their birth certificate.

Oh nice! I'm surprised that you don't even need a passport to come to canada if you are a US citizen. I bet you probably need a passport if you are planning on going beyond a visit.

You need a proof of citizenship - both for entering Canada and for returning to the US. A Passport/ Birth Certificate or other document showing nationality will do - drivers license will not suffice.
Are there other requirements that I should know about should one look for work (any kind: seasonal, temporary, permenant (sp?), contract, etc.) in Canada? I often hear about needing a visa if you get hired and the type of visa depends on the length & type of work you're looking for as well. BTW, how much of a chance (I guess on average, as this can definitely) does a college/university student have finding work (even if part-time) during their time at college until they get their degree? For me, it will be a solid two to three years until I get my Bacholor's (sp?) of Science in IT and I'm attending an online college (www.peirceonline.net). I figure the best time to come to Canada would be early May, which is when my summer break begins. Perhaps this will give me enough time to get 'established' (living & working somewhere?) and be ready for my autumn (September) online courses...
Thanks everyone so far... If this post needs to be moved, as it has expanded away from just visiting Canada, move the post moderators.
Visiting and Working are two distinct entities. If you are a US citizen, you can visit Canada by entering the border with proof of citizenship and a photo ID or just a passport (which serves both as a proof of ctznshp and photo ID).
If you mention at the border that you are gonna look for work, they will simply turn you around and will not let you in without proper work authorization.
There are no exclusive privilages for a US citizen to obtain work in Canada other than to avail of the NAFTA TN status for certain professions. Besides that, every individual who needs to work in Canada has to show evidence of Cdn citizenship, Cdn PR or work permit sponsored by your employer in Canada plus any entry visa that may be required.
Having said that, you can enter Canada to "visit" and then look for work. However, in order to begin your employment legally, you must be sponsored with a work permit by your future employer. Obviously, obtaining a PR or citizenship in short notice is out of the question.
Entering by foot, car, bus, flight makes no difference to the border officials as long as those means of transportation are legal for that border crossing. For example, foot crossing is not allowed in the windsor-detroit tunnel but allowed across the Niagara Falls border.
