AHMEDABAD: Sexual preference helped a 29-year-old woman from the city secure a permanent resident (PR) visa to Canada. The lesbian woman migrated earlier this week after she was sponsored by her girlfriend in Canada, who declared her as conjugal partner.

"She is probably the first first-ever lesbian from the country to immigrate to Canada as a conjugal partner," immigration consultant Lalit Advani, who assisted the girl in securing the resident visa, told TOI.

Changes made to immigration regulations in June 2005 allow Canadians to sponsor someone of the same sex as a common-law or conjugal partner.

Couples must prove they have lived together for at least one year to qualify as common-law partners. Those who cannot live together because of laws banning homosexuality in their home countries can qualify as conjugal partners if they live together for at least one year once they are in Canada.

The girl, who prefers to remain anonymous, is happy that unlike in India, she would be able to freely express her sexuality in Canada.

"People like prince Manvendrasinh Gohil of Rajpipla may dare make their gay status public, but there is no hope for people like me," said the girl, who says she and her partner now wanted to adopt a child.

At a time when most wannabe immigrants are condemned to waiting endlessly for the coveted visa, the girl considers herself lucky to get the visa in less than six months.

More so as her girlfriend from Ahmedabad also migrated to Canada on a skilled category visa just a year back.

The two were introduced at a party in 2001. They started going out for movies and became attracted to one another.

'Same-sex visa a tough process'
AHMEDABAD: The lesbian girl who got a visa to Canada initially wanted to go on a student visa but when the consultant realised she had a lesbian partner in the country, he advised her to try out sexuality as grounds for immigration.

"Applying for immigration on same sex grounds requires lot of expertise as the couple is required to prove the relationship on paper.

Application requires details like how many times they had physical intercourse, details of gifts they exchanged, joint property they hold together and lot of other intimate information," immigration consultant Lalit Advani said.

This doesn't make sense. Why do they need such private information which they can't verify anyway?
