I just read Chandresh's article titled \"Is Canada the right place for you?\". Frankly, I am quite shocked! Let me quote a portion of that article :
Quote
We all know that:
1. the medical help is absolutely lousy here
2. the education system is plagued by govt.'s lack of funding and laws of \\\"untouchability\\\", work to rule, etc. etc.
3. the racism is clearly and bluntly evident
4. corruption is of no less order than in India
5. family values have very very low priority in Canadian culture
6. temperatures are extreme here
7. crime is quite common here
8. cost of living compared to gross salaries is very high
9. taxes are one of the highest (or highest??) in the world
10. etc. etc. etc. etc. ............
Unquote
Few of the major reasons why I applied for immigration are:
1. Education system in India is not customised to suite your aptitude, personality and intelligence levels. I thought education in Canada would nurture the best qualities of my children and develop their personalities according to their individual skills.
2. I am fed-up of corruption levels in India that is so deep rooted in the society that nothing can be done about it. And one has to face it day in and day out!
3.Medical help is available in India, but it has become the most commercialsed profession. Surgeons stoop so low that the will perform a surgery on you even if it is not required just to make that additional buck.
Your physician will prescribe a 100 tests, because he has a cut with the labs and not because the tests are required. Getting insurance claims are no piece of cake either! So I presumed Canada would be better.
I can write more, but this is enough to start a \"charcha\". My question is, is Canada that bad? Should I review my decision?
Regards,
Vishal Grover

I am not sure from where you got that list. However, if anyone suggests racism in Toronto and surrounds (I dont know about other areas), then they need to get their head examined. That truly is my honest opinion.
This site is indeed depressing, try to read the posts of people who have succeeded here. Good luck!
Vishal,
Its not that bad. Not according to me. Like I have said before I personally have not faced any racism here. Its probably written when someone was in a bad stage. It was also true at that point for that person. Everyones opinion and experience will be different. Corruption is one of the reasons that I left india too...and I have not seen that level of corruption in Canada. Infact I have come across just one ocassion in 7 years that I have been here (with that broker i was talking about earlier).
It is not as prevalent or widespread as it is in India. Medical...again i have had no bad experiences and my wife has delivered both of my children in Canada. I do not regret coming here one bit.
That being said you cannot negate someone elses experiences, however negative(which happened for whatever reasons). They are the experiences of many others too. It may not happen to you, like it did not happen to me. That would not mean it does not happen at all. It would be highly immature to draw that conclussion.

Hello Vishal,
It was nice to see someone respond to my article written about 8 months ago. Not that my opinion has changed during these months as jake has faintly suggested, but I think I missed one point in my article.
The point that I missed is the same which I have emphasized in last few posts - it all depends on what background one has come from. For a person wanting to move from India, I certainly now agree that Canada is a place to move to. But I had moved from Singapore - which very few people know - is perhaps the best place for an Indian to live in. I had hoped that Canada being America, it would be very advanced in EVERYTHING, but I was disappointed since I had seen and experienced a higher level of advancement in educational, political, social, technological, financial, trasportation fields, and governmental agency work etc etc. To give you some examples:
1. yes medical help is lousy here compared to Singapore - after a minor accident ( I had falled down in a bus and hurt my shoulder), I was able to get a specialist see me at 10am, X-ray results by 12noon and on his request, since the problem was not evident from X-ray, MRI results by 4pm. Total expenses about $800 but like in Canada, I was covered by insurance so did not pay a cent from my pocket. Here in Canada, on a request from my doctor for an URGENT MRI, I got the earliest appointment after SIX WEEKS!!!
I can narrate some other cases, both experienced by my family as well as friends, but that will make this post too long, so let's refrain.
2. Education - it is great here - but only in university level. My daughter who used to be between 17-20th ranked in Singapore is amongst the top 3 here and the apple of teacher's eyes. And, I being is a CA myself, know that she is not academically smart. So you can draw the conclusion yourself.
3. Racism - according to Sujata (who did not read your post carefully and has asked you - I am not sure where you got that list from-), I should get my head examined. Well, if that was true, the top officials in Toronto administration got to do that as well since for last few months that is the burning topic of the city, in all the newpaper and even the senior officers of the admin services have acknowledged that racism exists and we have to accept it, no matter what. I read and accept it - so I cannot quote anyone, but if someone is interested, he can go to internet and look for racial profiling in Canada and find quite a few articles there. Truth is always bitter, and many times depressing - but you can't hide from it, and that is why though Sujata finds this site depressing, she keeps reading it for passing her time. ( I am using the gender \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"she\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" since the name suggests that - pardon me if I am mistaken)
4. I have acknowledged that corruption exits in India - it doesn't seem to be any less here - like in India, you just accept it.
5. The other points - well they need not be elaborated upon.
However, my article also says one thing - if you have the guts to fight it out, fight it, or go back and do not complain about it. I am trying to fight it out and in the process have made many compromises. But that would not make this place better than where I came from. Once again, this is much better than India, but still way behind places like Singapore. You might ask me - then why don't I go back to Singapore. Well quite a few reasons - the two topmost being that my children will not be able to adjust to the academic level there now (they might not fail but will have really tough time and this is not the time when I can take chances), and unfortunately, in Singapore, labour jobs are harder to get than in Canada!
