Surely you mean 'resident aliens' ;) :D

LOL. Or maybe FOUs (Fresh off UFO).

How ridiculous is this though? You could be a silicon valley millionarie, a heart surgeon, a mother of two etc etc on a greencard. They can pull you over one fine day, arrest you and you would have no recourse via the Civilian court system!!!

Talk about being treated like dirt!

Doesn’t this have similarities to Communist China or Cuba and draconian laws during Indian emergency period?

That's what it says. One of the quotes from the article is

Quote:

"It's pretty stunning that any alien living in the United States can be denied this right," said Jonathan Hafetz, an attorney for Al-Marri. "It means any non-citizen, and there are millions of them, can be whisked off at night and be put in detention."

And what about Canadian Citizens travelling to USA? Are they also suppose to be treated same way?

US can do anything - it can make its own rule. My daughter studying US history told me that during the war with Japan, US detain all its "American Born second-third-forth generation" Citizens of Japanese origin into special camps and captured their land/properties etc.

Well 'resident aliens' may not be a far off statement after all....look what I found on BBC today

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6146292.stm

"In July 2001, a mysterious red rain started falling over a large area of southern India.

Locals believed that it foretold the end of the world, though the official explanation was that it was desert dust that had blown over from Arabia.

But one scientist in the area, Dr Godfrey Louis, was convinced there was something much more unusual going on.

Not only did Dr Louis discover that there were tiny biological cells present, but because they did not appear to contain DNA, the essential component of all life on Earth, he reasoned they must be alien lifeforms.

"This staggering claim is that this is possibly extraterrestrial. That is a big claim I know, but all the experiments are supporting this claim," said Dr Louis.
"

I always hated being referred as a non-resident alien when I was in the US. If I had a green card, I would still be an alien, only this time, a resident kind. Good to hear that I'm not alone!

It is only after they sprinkle some holy water on you and "naturalize" you that you cease to be an alien!

I remember having to stand in a long line outside the Dept of Motor Vehicles office on a below freezing February morning from 6:30 to 8:30 AM to be let in, so I could renew my driver's license.

Reasons:

(1) All aliens were issued a driver's license that was valid only until the validity of their I-94. So every time the I-94 is renewed, you have to go to the DMV.

(2) And, of the more than a dozen DMV offices in New Jersey, us aliens could go to only 2 or 3 of them (regional processing centres or something like that) where they would verify your visa status. For this we would have to wait outside the office 2 hours before it opened!
