I'm going off topic from what the OP intended, but Manjeet's comments needed a response anyway....

Its more prevalent in canada than in the US.
I wouldn’t agree!
I’m in the US every couple of weeks. At airports in the mid-west, I’ve noticed that anyone who’s black or brown is almost invariably pulled aside for additional screening (wanding) even when they don’t trigger the metal detector. At first I thought it was just me, but then realized that it was pretty much the same for all blacks and browns around me. Racial profiling is more acute at some airports than others – in my experience not as bad at airports in the north-east US.
At Pearson, if browns and blacks were to be profiled, they’d probably have to stop every other traveller

And far as the laws are concerned, my thinking is, abide by them and stay away from trouble.
Travellers on airplanes aren’t breaking any laws but still get profiled in the US................
I once saw a Jewish family, probably hasidic (they wore those hat and had lockes), with one really old person in wheelchair, taken aside and given a thorough wanding. At Baltimore.
They were white as f***.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

All,
This article on the Real Id act, looks exagerated in Indian news media, the paper should quote :"Illegal alliens" instead of Alliens in general.
This act is certainly a pain for All UNLAWFULL residents ( whether on various visas or any other status) and will not and should not affect the persons who enter USA legally ( e.g. H1/l1/ and all visa types and even Green card holders etc )
The idea of this act seems to be put a check and end to recognising or providing a legal stance to a person who is in USA illegally. and in that context they have now given powers to the police dept. as well to randomly stop and check for his/her legal status in the country on the pretext of a doubt of identity and /or status.
this is fair enough
what is scary is that this privilege could be misused by the police themselves and could well become a tool to harass ordinary and legal residents in the country. most likely to effect are Asians because of the skin color and complexion and religious traditions and outfits.
I assume some of you might know as a matter of fact, that any foreign national who is in another country (other than country of residence) MUST ALWAYS ( at all times) carry his/her identity and status documents like passports and other realted documents sufficient enough to prove that he/she is in that country legally and are wwell documented.
But most the time we ( all foreigners) do not follow this rule for some or the other reason.
Now with this Real id act it seems that, we ( all foreigners) must follow this rule very strictly in order to avoid any kind of trouble and embarassment as well.
Ofcourse further loopholes and enforcement blues will come out in near future once the bill is signed by the US president and it comes into enforcement.
Your thoughts please.....

According to Dawn, this \"Real ID act, if enacted, would give the Secretary of Homeland Security unlimited powers. Immigrants will no longer be able to obtain driver's licenses or car insurance. Police can randomly stop an immigrant and ask him to prove his status and can arbitrarily detain him.\"

I guess no one checked the Indian Express site, it says \"According to Dawn\" which Dawn they are refering to????
May be at some place in the paper they have corrections notes about this news.
