Dear CDs,
I am confused whether to bring ADSL modem and router to Canada for internet connection?
If we subscribe for ADSL or DSL connection, do they (i.e. ISP) provide the modem also or is it charged additional? If yes, how much does it cost for 54MBps modem? How much does an internet DSL subscription cost?
Thanks for advices in advance.
i'm sorry but why you wanna bring the modem with you. if you get dsl connection the ISP will provide you the modem. some providers charge additional fee as modem rental n some don't. and you said 54MBps modem, are you talking about modem/router combo or just router. routers are cheap here. my friend got 54MBps wireless G router on boxing day for $2.99 that was retail price..hope i answered your question

New DSL modems would cost in $100 range. New wireless routers would cost around $50. Used, refurbished or on boxing day sale, it could be cheaper.
Not all DSL ISPs provide you with DSL modem. Modem rental fee also varies between ISPs.

54 MBPS is your router's speed and not DSL's speed.
Don't bet on buying a $3 modem or router!
You can compare the prices at http://www.canadianisp.com
DSL starts around $30 range for the smaller ISP providers, Bell Canada charges about $40-$45 without contract (with contract the price gets lower). Bell charges about $2/month, some charge close to $5/month, and some do not provide rental modem.
If you are bringing a modem from India, you will also need voltage convertor (110V).

No trees were killed by this post, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
