My indian passport is going to expire in the next few months and I have got the forms to fill to get a new passport.
Looking at the requirements that are provided it notes that we have to submit our PR cards.
Has any one done this before? Can you give me advice? How can they take my original copy of my PR card and keep with them for the 5-7 business days and then return along with the new passport? Isnt it not correct to request this..any one can throw some light on this it would be great..
i say this is a flawed procedure

I'm in the same situation - passport expiring early next year.
I am not at all comfortable mailing them my PR card and having them send my new passport by mail.
I believe until sometime ago they used to allow in-person renewal, but now it's all by mail.

it takes about 10-12 business days if there are no issues with the app. The passport/PR card is returned similar to CDN passport - by prepaid mail/priority courier. The consulate still has in person renewal or visa if the urgent need is proven & even on a holiday - there is additional cost though. Regardless of whats said about CGI-TO, they are really helpful as long as the case is genuine & one doesnt throw weight around.
BTW, on one hand - given what some Indian MP's have done, its not surprising if the consulate wants ample time to verify with original docs and on the other you dont want to know how these docs are handled internally.
Hi,
I just recently helped a lady and her child get their Indian passports renewed.
Both had to send in their PR cards. The lady's new passport and P/R was returned w/in 6 business days.
The child had to go in person to verify her id 'cos she was 6 when she had her passport issued and is 16 now and the fotos of then and now did not gel so they asked to see her in person. The request was made by phone, so both the lady and her child went to the Indian consulate and the IC officials saw the child and actually gave her the new passport and P/R card in person. As stated before the lady's was sent back by courier in a prepaid envelope. The child's passport was given to her in person and the Indian consulate did not return the prepaid envelope for her passport.
In the case there are several passports to be renewed, usually the IC asks that all the passports be sent in one envelope but that separate envelopes, one for each new passport, be enclosed for the return.
There were issues in between about passports being lost in the mail, but now the procedure is almost seamless.
Hi,
We got our daughter's passport renewed 4 months back in Toronto. They took the PR cards. They sent it by mail in the prepaid envelope provided by us while submitting the application.

Nothing unusual, Canadian Passport authority would ask you to submit original documents too like Citizenship Card for the issue of passport. So, just hand over the original PR and get your passport.
