Hi All:
Just wondering if anybody discussed about Indian food restaurents quality in North America?
Food tastes 10 times better in India than in North America and I want to know why?
We almost stopped visiting Indian Restaurents all together as quality and taste is boring. I want to know if this is only us or everybody.
Food taste is so good in India but whenever we go to Indian Restaurent here in Canada then its nightmare and I want to know why?

Are the Indians living in Canada/USA are lazy and they don't work hard to make sure what they cook is good?

I lived in USA for more than 7 years and visited numerous restaurents in Los Angeles, San Jose and New Jersey area but found no apealing restaurent.

We found south Indian Restaurents little better than North Indian Restaurents.

Regards

Nilesh

You are right Nilesh

Here u hardl enjoy food in any Rest/Hotels in Canada

Apart from that, customer service is so bad here, that many we wonder why
our people are in this Business.
Not only me, my friends who recently visited from UK, they were unhappy with Food & Customer service

Any one know why our Rest/ Hotels only have family members as Waiters, in the counters & as cook also

Any finds this as odd? Why can't they hire Prefessional?

I agree with you guys. The food does not taste "Same", I would not say it is worst, but at least it is different.

One of the difference for the taste could be the ingredients. Here they cook in corn oil, where as in India it used to be ground nut oil. The spices are also different. Some of the stuff like curry leaves are not fresh here. The Koftas are made from different milk etc. etc.

In San Jose are I found some real good restaurants though.

GG:

I beg to differ on what you said above :) my MIL used to bring home fresh curry leaves and then we dry them at home ourselves..so you can get them..but probably not in every city :)

I have heard that they use Canola oil here..its the cheapest..
I agree about the milk though..buffalo vs Cow...
Spices....... are they different? I thought you can get all indian spices here??

My take on Indian restaurants is that many of them are 'family businesses' with entreprenerial (sp)Immigrants creating a business venture. They may not have a burning desire to create culinary masterpeices but just bring in a liveable income.

My parents had a restaurant years and years ago when I was a baby..back in Winnipeg. They would never do it again.. but they did believe in customer service.

I agree with the others that some south asian restaurants really lack in Customer service. However some customers also dont care..they want no frills food at the bottom dollar.

I assume you mean you hardly enjoy Indian food here?As I mentioned before..many restaurant businesses are family busineses that are based on the premise that all indian food is teh same.....

However I do agree with you about taste though. North indian vegetarian food from restaurants..all taste the same to me..regardless if I go into a 'dhaba' style restaurant or into a gourmet restaurant downtown Vancouver and pay $24/plate. The Tharka just overpowers...

However having said that..there is one restaurant in the lower mainland that makes a to die for Shahi paneer...They have a professional chef.

I actually don't agree with you guys here. May be I have been to the best restaurants in Vancouver and Toronto. I used to be a regular in a Mississauga Indian restaurant, where the food was superb. I don't know the name of the restaurant and neither the location (sorry for that). There was one more that I visited in Brampton where the food I found was actually better than the restaurants in India. Since I only lived in Toronto for about 9-10 months two years ago, I can't recall the names.

Now, let's talk about Vancouver. I have been to few restaurants here and alas! the food is simply superb. The one is Ragaa at W. Broadway (Chilli Paneer - the best), Maurya (Broadway again), Rangoli (Vancouver), and Tandoori Kitchen (Canada way, Burnaby). The one I've been in Coquitlam - a good food. Then there's a one in Vancouver right beside Ross Street Gurdwara, which is not a restaurant, but a typical 'Halwai ki dukaan', where you can only take away the food. Their Chilli Paneer is the one I could die for. I have heard 'Viz's' is also pretty good in Vancouver. The owner 'Viz' has written a book of Indian Recipees which you can find in Chapters as well. He's also pretty popular among the local population.

I have heard 'Bombay Sey' in Surrey is pretty good as well, but haven't got a chance to go there yet.

Of all the above restaurants that I visited, I found the customer service pretty good - no complaints at all.

Methinks "the Host" next to sq. 1, Miserysaga ( I mean Mississauga) is pretty good.

Nirvana on Brunel Rd, Miserysaga, ain't so bad either though I haven't been there in a long time.

Otherwise our own food at home is better.

If you are expecting a 'Bukhara' here forget it.
Not even a Noorani's ( near Haji Ali for you Mumbaiites)

If you are into Fusion food try 5th ElementT on 1033 Bay Street.
