Just curious. Is this phrase still prevalent during the job interview?
DIO
As recently as today, during an Interview, they asked me this question. However, this was a big office and I have seen that if the office is big and professional they ask this question (FYI, I am not in IT).
When I joined my current office in Oct. 2002, they did not ask my this Q, as I was paid just $10. However, During the same period, when I joined a labour job at UPS for $9/ hr. Salary, they did ask me that Q,
As long as there is tight labour market, where we are at the mercy of the Interviewer, This Question will be asked (forever!)

This question I am seeing it is a great opportunty for the interviewee to explain his or her crendential to start the interview in the right direction. Talk about your self for five minutes when the interviwer asked this question.

I am new
This is a standard question which is asked in most interviews. Use such questions to highlight your skills used/acquired and results acheived (rather than just telling your job postions), in that position.
As an Example:
Average answer: I worked as a Sales Executive for Company ABC from Sep 2005 - Aug 2007
Better Answer: As a Sales Executive with Company ABC, I utilized my communication and relationship building skills to cold call and make high impact presentations to Finance Controllers of mid size business customers , whch resulted in us acquiring 15 new accounts and $1 Million in additional revenue, over a period of 18 months.
These days most of the interviews are Behavioural interviews and require a certain framework to effectively answer these questions.
For me the answer would depend on at what part of interview it is asked. If it is the beginning of the interview, I will try to sell my job skills but if it is toward the end of the interview, I will speak of my personal life, family involvement and life stability.
This is me and my strategy, it always worked for me.

This question is invariably asked at the starting of the interview, as a 'warm up' or 'ice breaker' question. I would avoid talking about my personal life during a job interview.
