Dear CDs,

My Nephew in India is planning for a short term course in USA and will be studying in Miami for about 6-8 months starting end of Feb. We are looking for suggestions for his health insurance - should he buy from India or is it advisable to buy coverage from American company after landing? For either case appreciate if you can provide references to company and plans - which coverages should be definitely taken. Just incase it matters, he is 22 yr and otherwise in sound health.

All comments/advises are welcome.

Rgds,
Hiren

Hiren,
Universities offer their own subsideized health insurance for their students. In case, if your nephew is intending to study in a small institute which does not offer this subsidized health insurance, My suggestion is that he does not take up any health insurance for the duration of his stay there. It is very unlikely that he may be affected / sick/ hospitalised etc.... For common issues (like Sore thorat, Malaria, Fever etc...He can bring medicines from India and use it).
When I was in New York last month, I spoke to a Desi who was a Green card holder ( My classmate). He told me that no hospital in USA can refuse a patient (irrespective of if he is able to pay or not) for emergency addmitance (like accident/ heart failure etc...).
So let your nephew use his judgement in this.

-- I would advise agains this advice. Buy insurance from the american insurance companies - this is my advice.

-- Sure, but it is not *That* easy. They charge you upfront - before admitting you. If you do not pay, then they refuse you admission. If you are dying (life threatning condition) *ONLY THEN* they HAVE to treat you to save your life - and YES, then they come after you for the money.

Considering all this, I strongly recommend having a medical insurance.

Try Blue Cross. Their coverage is good, but the cost varies depending on your age, state of residence and the medical history.
