Picture books is definitely a good idea.
Potty training can be a cubersome process in Canada esp. when both mum and dad are working. My desi friends tell me that kids are already potty trained at the age of 1 in India. That is b'cos the concept of Diapers is mostly absent and the child keeps on being wet from birth and hence is trained as soon as they can mutter some words to express discomfort.
In Canada, usually no day care / provider would allow to potty train a child less than 2 year old. The signs that the baby is ready for potty training is pulling at the diapers when it is wet and that is when people say that you should potty train them.
My views : (apart from the ones mentioned above)
1. When the kid is around 1 and older (1 1/2 is the optimum time), buy a sit down potty which is to the Kids ergonomics (rather than buying an attachment to be fixed in the normal water closet)
2. Buy a lot of under wear and allow the child to be in underwear and without diapers.
3. Whenever the baby pees and poo's point to the potty and say that it is the place to do it.
4. Give timeout for 5 mins (when the child is over 1 1/2 only) if the child poos or pees outside the potty (after having given sufficent grace time taht the baby has to use the potty)
5. Find out the general time taht the baby poo's and sit the baby in the potty around that time (eg. 1/2 hour after waking up in the morning, after evening snack, after return from the day care etc...) . Read some books to ease the tension from the child. If the child likes to watch TV, bring the potty to the living room.
6.Read many potty training books written by professionals.
7. Put diaper on the child only when he/she is sleeping/ travelling. All other times use underwear only
8. IMO, if the child is taught potty training after age 2, he/ she will learn about it in 1 week max.
9. Try to get a daycare where potty training is made a priority. Does not work well with home based daycares. You will be amazed at how much you save on Diapers. Even if your house is carpeted, you can use the savings on Diapers to shampoo clean the whole house at a later date.
hope this helps.

I would not just sit back waiting ...nothing wrong in introducing your kid to new ideas and then let them make a choice and then take action as per their readiness/ willingness!
