Thanks a lot for the valueable information.
I really never thought about the 1000 islands option....that does sound pretty interesting.
Hi SS
I may be travelling to New Jersey in May. Do you have any do's and dont's while driving in US. Here we normally go at 110-120 Kms on the 400 highways. I hear that in US the speed limits are strictly enforced and above that you have an Ontario plate, so better stay on the limit. Any such do's and dont's in addition to the above?
I am planning to take the TO- Syracuse-Binghamton-NY route. How much tolls should I be prepared for?
How often do you take a break? Any suggestions.

Toronto-Albany route will certainly be faster. Keep in mind, Bufallo to Albany is I-90 which is a toll highway.
OTOH, if you go thru Syracuse & Binghamton, you drive thru Pennsylvania, and the route is thru mountains, but scenic. But you don't pay as much toll as the other one.
I mostly take 401 E to 1000 Islands and then onto I-81. The route is longer by about 50 kms, but a lot less traffic. We generally stop at 100 island for an hour or two. I take I-81 all the way to Scranton, and from there onto I-380 - I-80 - I-95 into NY
But the Albany route is certainly faster, if you're looking to save time.
...and please don't speed.
Iceberg,
I travelled on that Route in Dec. 2007.
The tolls were around $18 one way. On the way, I did not see a single police officer and was traveling at 110- 120 km / hr. As soon as I reached Greater NYC area, I could see so many cars being pulled over for speeding (which I have never seen in Toronto). On a 30 min. drive along the Greater NYC area , I saw around 6 cars having been pulled over. My destination was Newark Liberty Intl. Airport.
I took a break every 1 hour of driving (not that I was tired but only due to the fact that my car might overheat as it is an old thrid hand car). Prices at the reststops were way over the roof for speciality restaurants. We stuck to known chains like Tim, MacDonalds, Wendy's, BK etc.. were prices were Damn cheap. Each item was just $1 + tax.
In New york (and may be NJ), you can not do a right turn on a red light. All gas stations in NJ are We Serve. You need not give any tips. This is the law in the state that all gas stations should be served. I gave a tip and the gas bar attendent was very surprised.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think this time around I am going to cross from Niagara side and not take the Thousand Island route, though that definitely sounds fun filled.
I have a G2. Is that fine in the states ( Pennsylvania and New York) I would be travelling. Or do I have to get a G?
