Yes ~ Canadian citizens need to sponsor their spouses but is it not so that the 2/5 years rule applies exceptionally to spouses of Canadian citizens ?

Means if one of the spouse renounces citizenship and (assume takes another country's citizenship ) he / she can continue being a PR forever despite being out of Canada on account of above .
If a Canadian citizen "X" renounces Canadian citizenship and take up another country's citizenship, X does not become a PR of Canada even if their spouse "Y" is still Canadian citizen. Y will then have to sponsor X for X to come to Canada and become PR. X can count each day accompanied with Y spent outside Canada for meeting residency obligations for PR though will have to come to Canada for renewing PR card each time.
