I am a citizen of Canada. I was wondering, if I take up citizenship of a country which does not allow dual citizenship (like Singapore), can I renounce my citizenship and take back my PR? It is strange that I have never seen any discussion on this board for renouncing Canadian citizenship or some one taking another citizenship after Canadian citizenship.

This question has come to my mind after I came to know of the daughter of a friend of mine who is not taking up US citizenship (she is a GC holder and wife of a US citizen) only because as a Singapore citizen, she has better chances of getting a nice job in UNO due to quota system in UNO for different nationalities.

Apart from that I know Mark Mobious the investment industry guru has renounced his US citizenship for Singapore citizenship simply to save on taxes!!

You can renounce your canadian citizenship but you do not automatically get back your PR. You will have to apply from the country you are citizen of, let us say Singapore, and go through the immigration process again.

Being married to a Canadian citizen automatically makes you a PR - I do not know the exceptions though.

If 1 spouse was a Canadian and the other a Singaporean , maybe it can work both ways .

Nope - not true. I have seen many cdns sponsoring their spouse for the PR status - it is not automatic.

Wonders never cease in this country that is well known for Ice Hockey and boxing bouts.

First the three rounds of twenty minutes each and then the sudden death o.t. and if that fails then, the shoot out and to top it off a tie breaker, WOW.!! (Hey! what happened in the boxing bout?)

It doesn't matter what you do, the tax man says you have no say in this matter (CRA), the two governments will decide upon a tie breaker, who gets the tax from YOU ! And you can do nothing about it.

What both ways?? There is only one way. CRAWAY.!! (No boxing bouts)

Just for your information.

Freddie.

It is not automatic.

\"If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, you must apply to sponsor them.\"

I am sorry I gave my views from a Residence and not Tax purpose .

Yes ~ Canadian citizens need to sponsor their spouses but is it not so that the 2/5 years rule applies exceptionally to spouses of Canadian citizens ?

"PERMANENT RESIDENT OBLIGATION
OPTION 1. Accompanying a Canadian citizen outside Canada

You may count each day you accompanied a Canadian citizen outside Canada provided that the person you accompanied is your spouse, common-law partner or parent (if you are a child under 22 years of age). "

Means if one of the spouse renounces citizenship and (assume takes another country's citizenship ) he / she can continue being a PR forever despite being out of Canada on account of above .
