As a general rule that may be true, but there are exceptions. There are some exit's that do not have a corresponding entry and vice versa. I've seen that a lot in the US, however to a lesser extent in Canada.

One example on 401 in Toronto is Brimley exit in the East end.

Just something to keep in mind.

Agree SS, I was factoring in the OP's 80:20 comment though :) . I've found that the exceptions are far and few, most of the times, this does work. At least has for me.

If you don't find the exit on the opposite direction, just apply the rule again. If the exit exists on the highway, you'll get it for sure the next time :).

When you drive on freeway, some times there is a two lane exit with one lane dedicated to an exit and another one split into two (one for exit and one going straight on freeway).
If you want to go straight, try not to be on the split lane. Many a time I have seen if the traffic is slow for lane split for an exit (for ex. due to red light), people try to merge into fast maving lane for whatever reason. If you are just behing him, you may have to apply brakes all of sudden.
Also it works vice versa. People from the fast moving split lane all of sudden slow down and try to merge in the lane split for exit.
For better understanding visualize (if you are from GTA) 401 east when splits for 427 N and south. Mostly trafic for south bound is slow. My van almost flipped because of some moron trying to merge into fast moving north bound 427.

One golden rule that I forgot (which most people flout) is to avoid cell phones while driving. If you really need to talk/text, get off the road onto the shoulder or a parking lot.

How do you handle when in rainy weather a car ahead of you in the left lane sprays water on your windshield from its tires ??

I have encountered this before also and today as well (being a rainy day) - my instinct is to brake , being blinded by the spray but wonder how to handle this on a freeway ??

On a 3 lane highway its generally easiest to drive in the middle lane .

Maintain a safed distance - you d be surprized to note the braking distance if the car ahead of you stops .

Avoid late decisions either on highway / otherwise - they create panic amd endanger others' safety besides yours . If you miss a turn / exit its not the end of the road ....... 10 mins / kms are less valuable than some one s life - DRIVE SAFE ALWAYS .

Driving on the Right lane - There are some places where the Right lane exits. And sometimes in a high speed heavy traffic it is difficult to change lanes in the last moment and you end up exiting at a place where you did not want to. This is specially a problem on unknown roads and for new HighWay drivers like me. Any tips from the experienced Highway drivers will be helpful. Thanks.

And even if you want to use it - don't slow down just because you want to be a safe driver on highway.

If you are on Bluetooth or headset - I dont mind talking. But then there are drivers who are distracted even by talking to fellow passengers.

If I may add one -
While going on for Long drives ... keep some Gums or Peanuts or Bites (drinks might just increase your pit stops).

When feeling drowsy esp 1-2 hrs after a heavy lunch , pull over to an exit - lever the seat full backwards and nap for 15 - 20 mins ... I was surprised with how refreshed and alert I felt after such a short nap vs the drowsy feel before the nap........... on a long drive I take a 10-15 min nap after every 3 hours .... gets you going ..... there s no alternative to rest .
