The very interesting question this year who is the best batsman in the world in test cricket, but don’t dare 'yes' we are talking about two genius Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar and Australian Skipper Ricky Ponting.

With the current form, Ponting will have to play alteast 3 more years, after Sachin gets retirement. Since Jan 01 2007, Ponting have scored only 6 centuries. His batting average is also very poor, just 42 during this time. He added just 2500 runs during this time.

During same period, Since Jan 01 2007, Sachin scored 9 centuries with batting average of 56 and scored about 2500 runs in 6 tests fewer than Ponting. If Sachin continues the way he is batting right now for another 2-3 years, it would be hard for Ponting to break the records.

Ponting was doing great when he was surrounded by great players like Hayden and never had to play in real pressure. Sachin on the other had always played under pressure.

If u really wanna compare then may be Sachin Vs Lara

Ponting was a pretty distructive batsmen at his prime especially in Tests when the Aussie team was firing on all cylinders..

In Test matches i dont think even Tendulkar ever played at that level except during the series where we beat Aus in india.

Where Tendulkar beats ponting is the consistency over a longer period of time.

In test Ponting should be rated as a better player..

In one dayers Tendulkar beats Ponting hands down..

my opinion: Ricky Ponting is a better one-day player because of his ability to play under pressure and gets runs whatever way as needed.
Tendulkar is a better batsman because of superior skills, temprament and consistency.
Therefore he's a better test player than Ponting.

But above all, Tendulkar is a better cricketer and a better person because Ricky Ponting is a jerk, an a-hole in modern day cricket.
He continues the tradition of brash, compulsive-aggressive Australian cricketers.

It is shameful that players like Ponting and Symonds are playing for the same team that great men like Bradman played for.

Regarding comparison between Bradman and Tendulkar, it is hard to do because they are 3 generations apart and the game has changed very much.
That said, Bradman is probably a better skilled batsmand than Tendulkar.
I don't think anyone will ever come close to Bradman's average.
Tendulkar has some technical flaws that surface under pressure or when faced with really good quality pace bowling like Walsh, Akram, McGrath, etc.
But then maybe Bradman had big flaws too, he never played as long as players these days and that was before the time of slow motion replays and close circuit stump cameras.

Ponting was selected as Player of the decade. I never followed it closely, so I did some study on the numbers of the last decade and this is what I found for each class player for all international matches - including Tests, One-Days and T-20s.

The numbers are for last 10 years. The numbers in brackets are career.

Catches: 240 (313)

Sachin

See who is ahead? Sachin of Ahead of Ponting by miles.. And Kallis, definately the best. He might not be great to watch batting (or even bowling), but if numbers are the base, then he should be awarded player of the decade award.

For most of last 10 yrs, Ponting was playing under well-settled opening pair. It makes huge difference to middle order. Look at last 2-3 yrs for Ponting and you'll know what I am talking about. It will be well below his career numbers.

To me, Kallis is the man - not just bat and ball but even his hands in Slip. Ask Donald & Pollock - how much they appreciate seeing Kallis in Slips. Just like Dravid for Kumble n team.
