Atlast somebody is thinking sensibly in Canada.

I do not work for Canada Post. But I know spouse of somebody who works for Canada Post.

I know many Desis with very good qualifications from India working there.

If you are thinking about the unionised job then this is your answer.

Canada Post is a good job and also unionised.

It is a long drawn process to get in.

You need to apply during peak season and they will call you all odd hours when people do not come to work. This is typically at midnite on a cold heavily snowed winter night when somebody is stuck at home.Initially If you do not show up a couple time they will stop calling you.whatever you earn will go towards the union dues.

Later on they increase hours and slowly you go up in seniority and one fine day you get hired. This slow increase in hours will take any where from 5 to 10 years to get full time.

The top rate is 22 bucks per hour with excellent health benefits and a fantastic vacation pay. They also give free uniforms.

Based on seniority you can go for delivering mail and other jobs. Once you are given an area and if you deliver mail for that area you can go home. Many in CP have 2 jobs and they get paid for guaranteed hours and they are also working at the same time on another job.

That is if you have to deliver mail for an area in 6 hours and you finish it in 2 hours you'll still get paid for 6 hours while you are free to go to another job and start working there and get paid there to.

You cannot be fired and your pay is decided by union negotiation.

Thanks Vandematram for sharing some wonderful insider information about Canada post. Looks like these companies (which employ mainly locals/natives) are a tremendous place to work at but then most immigrants canot even go near Canada post for jobs as they donot give jobs for immigrants with foreign qualifications.
However, Timon, is an accountant and a very senior person at that and hence I would assume that he might have asked the question for senior accountant designation.
There was a thread going on in Redflag deals (and this was based mainly on postman/delivery jobs) and the insider news was that it was a great place to work in , in the sense that the pay was great with less work. However, I seem to recall some politics among senior staff.
Hope this helps.

Peace

Thanks VM for informative posting.

My understanding is that Canada Post jobs are based on contacts. It is imperative that someone pushes your resume.

It is unfortunate that immigrants in such circumstances are put to disadvantage.

I have previously lamented about the culture of reference in public sector job.

In Canada, there are thousands of agencies which are funded by taxpayers. The taxation structure is such that employees can not escape tax. Most first generation immigrants are in jobs and hence contribute to tax kitty. However, since they are not politically organized, the taxpayer funded agencies do not give them jobs. There is no transparency. Some college graduate who has done diploma in HR and has little understanding and appreciation of our education reviews our fax and then dumps it in garbage. It is estimated that 33% of jobs in Canada are covered by taxpayer funded agencies. One of the best example would be E-health of Mcguinty which was given funding of billions of dollars and was staffed with Mcguinty cronies and their scandal is well known. Executives there made millions while we were left high and dry.

At Canada post also, my understanding is that there is no criteria as to who is called for interview and job.

Our Liberal MPPs and MPs like Ruby Dhalla enjoy perks attached with office while getting elected on strength of votes of CDs.

It is real irony that an employee of Canada post sorting letters can get $22 an hour ($70,000 annually with other benefits) or TTC ticket collector can get $100,000 with overtime while a first generation computer programmer Desi will get $35.000.

The reason is that for taxpayer funded agencies like Municipalities, Health organizations, Universities, etc. there is no entrance test like UPSC in India. The result is that nepotism and cronies get in while we are left with labor jobs.
