A few years back, while driving in a snail pace traffic, I had to apply brakes when person trailing me hit my car. We got out/ found no big damage/ just scratches/ bid good bye. But recently when similar happened; I was the one who trailed. Both came out/ just scratch/ so were about to say good bye when the other person, wanted to exchange informations just in case, which we did.
After 3-4 weeks, he called me to tell that cost for fixing his car (that scratch) is 1200/-. He, “very kindly” wanted to know if I will pay it or he shall go thru my insurance? I calculated that paying from pocket was better option than even to bother them (insurance).
Any suggestions and is there a better option in this situation?

Ben !
Welcome to the real world.
This is recession time. People need money.
Police will not get involved if the damage is less than $ 1000 and if no report has been filed at the collision centre.
However, if the person complains to your insurance (since you exchanged details), your insurance will call you and ask you about the incident.
What is normally done is that, both you the other guy go to a garage known to you (ben) and then ask for a estimate and then give the person either the money or the choice to have it repaired/painted at the garage of your choice. If you hand in money, get a signed note from him stating that money had been paid for the incident and that the case is closed.
In many cases, these people just get inflated quotes to swindle you.
Welcome to the reality of Canada/the world.

Thanks TK,
Gives me solace, I chose the best option (and paid).
I know there are things, not so good about Canada, but I have nothing against my Canada, my country. I am making on some, loosing on some fronts; overall this country gave me in 10 years what I could not get in my country of birth in 40 years.
I love and respect my both mother(land)s.
