I thought that there is no need of surrendering Indian passport if u got OCI on or before May 31, 2010.

I sent email to the Ottawa office and they replied that "Even if your Indian passport was expired or cancelled it must be surrendered"

I just want to confirm if this is true. I am not getting any clear answer.

The problem is that there is no single rule is enforced by each consulate.
Ottawa (Canada) office says totally different thing.

The link you provided is for US people only.

Nobody knows what the OCI holders (Who got it before May 31,2010) should do.

Anybody knows what the Canadians should do?

According to the CGI Toronto's website:

"Those who acquired the foreign citizenship on 31 May, 2010 or earlier need not pay the Renunciation Fee. However, they must get their Indian passport, whether already expired or not, duly cancelled. For this, they can approach the Consulate whichwill make necesary en=triesi the records kept with us, cancel the passport and return it to you after marking it "Cancelled" for your future reference. A fee of $20 is charged fior this service."

Note the typo's in the above para, it actually apprears on the website that way

Here is the -> http://www.cgitoronto.ca/Misc/surrcert.html

One point that they are not clear on - IF somebody acquired Canadian citizenship before May 31, 2010 and they are already OCI holders and their passport was cancelled, when they appled for the OCI, do they have to do still have to acquire the surrender certificate?

I booked an appointment with VFS guys and when I was there to apply for OCI, they asked me Surrender Certificate as rule is changed over night. It is in India only rules change over night.Then I sent my passports to Indian Consulate, Vancouver with fee for all family members and applied for Surrender Certificate (It was clearly written in their web site that it is required if any body applies for OCI, PIO etc.). After a week, I got my passports back with cancelled stamp on it. No Surrender Certificate nothing. When I called VFS again and asked whether they really need Surrender Certificate while applying for OCI, the guy told me that if passport is cancelled that is sufficient. The same guy told me a week before that they need Surrender Certificate. Why Indian guys don't follow what they say. Even they insisted before for Surrender Certificate and now they didn't care to send it, when applied and there is no letter or any information, why they are not sending it. The entire story appears like that they desperately need money and not interested to do what they preach. It only happends in India.

I am now happy that I am a proud Canadian.

Here is http://www.cgitoronto.ca/Misc/faqsurr.html for those who acquired citizenship on or before 31 May 2010 and passport has already cancelled by CGI.
Below is in FAQ;

My Indian passport has already been cancelled by an Indian Mission but I was not issued a Surrender Certificate. Do I need to obtain one?
No, provided you acquired foreign citizenship on or before 31 May, 2010.

Hope this helps.
