Hi desis,

I have immigrated here during april 2009 and was looking for professional job
for about 3 to 4 months. Atteneded two interviews but was not successful. Thereafeter i stopped applying to jobs.

Again i started to applying to companies since june 2010

I got three interviews. I am basically an electrical engineer and PMP certified. Have no P E ng here. I worked in abudhabi for many years.

In my last company in abudhabi i worked as project manager for their electrical construction projects and when i left from the company they gave me a huge bonus and they gave me a letter too appreciating my efforts.

The company has not entered in to bonus agrrement with me in the official employment contract but paid me this huge bonus based on verbal agreement with GM during my interview.

Now my question:

I have been successful in getting interview calls from canadian based companies and during the interview i used to mention to them that i got a huge bonus for my efforts from my previous company. I thought the interviewer will feel my worthiness in Project management.

The last three interviews have not offered me the positions and still i am on a look out for professioanal job.

Also i have noticed something from the interviewers :

They ask very few questions and they allow me to talk. If i have to talk then i can talk for hours about my job.

I am little confused why the companies ask very few questions during interview.

Is it negative thing to tell the companies that i got huge bonus from my previous comapny?

Why they dont ask qustions during interview?
If they call for interview, i feel that they have the duty to ask questions and confirm that they choose a right candidate?

I have no answers to all these questions. I have another interview lined up on coming thursday. I want to prepare myself and want all of you to share the experience in their successful interview.

Thanks in advance.

First - its great that you get called to interviews. Employers are interested in your skillset.
However, its hard to say without knowing specifically how you address the bonus in your interview. Do they ask? When do you mention it?

how long do the interviews last? Do you send thank you letters after the interview?

My concern is that talking about a bonus can be seen as boasting. You have to be careful in why or how you mention it. It may indicate you are expecting a huge salary.

You can show that you were valued by the company through your receiving promotions, greater responsibility, more work rather than your bonus/salary.

I will suggest not to talk about you bonus with out they ask you. If you want to emphasise your acheveiment do it in different way. Don't talk too much only to the point and talk about your skill you bring with you and how it help you to do the job you are looking for. And how your skill help the company to reduce the cost or to do the job more efficiently.

Hi morningrain,

Thanks for your quick response.

Interview no1) The first one which i attended lasted for about 90 minutes.
The interviewer ( HR ) was extremely happy, she said that. She said there will be one more interview in USA and will fix the date and inform me.
I mentioned about the bonus matter to her, she did not ask me.In this company, the interviewer asked many questions and i felt i had "full interview"
I sent "thank you" letter through recruting consultant.

Thereafter they never responded.

Interview no2)

I had a phone interview ( 15 min) then they called me for face to face interview.
In the face to face interview, he did ask very few questions. It was up to me to explain about my whole career. He asked some stupid quetions too.
My view was he was nice in speaking but not enough to interview.
It did not matter to me whether he is knowledgeble or not.
From the looks i could guess he is from our neighbour country and i was hopeful that he will offer to me. Here too i mentioned to him about the bonus without his asking. He said good. The interview lasted for 30 min.

They never responded and i understood they hired some one else. They did not bother to send an email to tell me that they hired some one else.

Interview no 3)

The first one over phone by HR. She spoke to me for 4 minutes and fixed another interview over phone.

In the next telephonic interview, the HR and senior project manager were there. Once again it was upto me to explain the whole thing.
I asked if there is any specific questions from them, they asked 2 or 3 questions, that is it. Here too i mentioned about the bonus thing. They did not tell anything. The interview lasted for about 15 min. She said normally their GM would interview, but bços i am in ontario, they interviewed over phone.
I sent a thank you letter after the interview and said i am happy witht he interview and kooking firward to it.

The HR said she will tell me within 1 week time. Now it is about 2 weeks, no responce. Not even an email to state that they hired some one else.

Interview no 4)

It is scheduled on thursday. This time what......?

I feel i am missing something,...... i do not know what.

But i will be careful here after when mentioning about the bonus.

From the above, is there anything wrong with respect to normal canadian employers interview?

Pl respond. Thanks.

Perfect.

I emphasise on following :

1) How many years of experience in similar field.

2) How i reduced the cost and effectively saved for the company and converted the loss project in to profitable one.

3) what the company in turn offered to me via bonus.

Do not talk about anything related about money, vacation details, benefits etc.. At the end interview they ask you about "do you have any questions"
just ask how long it takes to know about the results?, in house training program, etc?

Hi NM,

Could there be any problems with your references? In other words, are all of your references positive ones? Do your ref's know that you are interviewing and do they have copies of your current resume? If you have listed a ref that is possibly negative please take them off your list.

Secondly, what kind of stupid questions were you asked in the second interview?

I agree with the other poster who told you not to mention the bonus. I think it will not be helpful.
