Timon- you are not the first person to think that way.

Everyone thinks like you do. And all have tried options before and by process of exclusion decide where to go.

Can't think of a place. May be try Switzerland.

Where do we really go and live a peaceful life? What I am looking for is just peace of mind...not too much money or opportunities..just a small place to live and die...

Where is that?

timon

Really nice question. Like Sudhish says all of us grapple with this at one time or the other. Hopefully all of us will find it. For me that place is where I am right now, In the knowledge that I can love and am loved in return :) .

Switzerland, Singapore and Nunavut are the backup plans :D

Some thing I thought may interest some... An answer by S.N. Goenka(Vipassana teacher) and someone whose teachings I find myself attracted to.

1. Is it okay to have a craving for enlightenment?

It is wrong. You will never get enlightenment if you have a craving for enlightenment. Enlightenment just happens. If you crave for it, you are running in the opposite direction. One cannot crave for a particular result. The result comes naturally. If you start craving, " I must get nibbana, I must get nibbana", you are running in the opposite direction of nibbana. Nibbana is a state which is free from craving, and you want to reach that state with craving - not possible.

Timon,

How about moving out of the GTA? Isn't Canada, except for about 4/5 big cities, a quiet place overall? Many think its too quiet everywhere else.

Have to tried to look for jobs in other provinces, away from crowd? Maybe you'll find in your Canadian backyard what you're looking for all over the world. How about moving to New Foundland or Alberta or some parts of B.C. for that matter?

Timon, sorry to burst your bubble about singapore but in my experience, I did not like the place.(I havent lived there just visited as a tourist) I liked it as a tourist but i wouldnt like living there. Just my opinion.
I have lived in the US and found people in the US are far more friendlier. Havent lived in canada so dont know.
I found that the general population in singapore was extremely clannish and cold! And that is strange considering tourism is a big part of their economy. How can they afford to be so cold and unfriendly to guests visiting their country?

To give an eg. my husband and me were walking thro 'china town' in singapore and looked like tourists(with our backpacks and cameras etc). we needed some help with directions and thought we'd ask some local people. we just about said 'excuse me' to a localite and he took 3 steps back and said 'no, no, no' even before we could ask him anything and acually waved us away! I am sure we didnt look like we were going to hurt him, rob him or ask him for money but well....! :) There were more incidents like that in our short stay of 10 days. Surprisingly, even some of the 2nd generation Indians did not want to be addressed as Indians, they insisted they were singaporeans and not Indians and we should please not try to get friendly or familiar with them because our skin colours matched! We might have been the exceptions to this kind of treatment, but I definitely know I dont want to live there.

I found malaysia and malaysians far warmer and friendlier. People were more cheerful and happy, more willing to help.We met a pakistani guy who actually walked us all the way to the busstop(which was a 10 minute wlak in the mid day sun) and even invited us home for lunch!! The place too has far more natural beauty as opposed to singapore which is more a man made paradise.

My two bits..:)

As far as the best place to live ..i guess its a matter of weighing the pros and cons of what's impt.. no place is perfect ..and completely depends on personal choice and personal experience, what's terrible for me may be great for another. So, nothing compares to actually trying it out for oneself.

reachme, i have heard the same about people in Singapore from friends.
The other day a Filipino nurse was telling me how cold they were in Hong Kong as well. I wonder if it is just with the Chinese background people.
Sometime circumstances make them behave that way. I think most people from communist countries are very cold when you approach them.

Since I suggested Singapore and there have been some questions raised relating to it, I would like to reply later since it really needs a well worded and detailed reply.

However, it might be possible only over the weekend.

Hehe....take your time .....if it was so easy to answer you'd have responded right away .

or maybe you do not even have to make another strong pitch for Singapore "again"....we all realize you love it ...but we don't.

Lets respect our different opinions and leave it at that.
