Congratulations !. I think that you should take up the offer. I know that you are not in IT and in a field which is not known to receive Desi's kindly.
Let me tell you of my ideas :
1. Take the GC and move to the US. You may have to give/sell your house for 5 % loss (to the agent) but then you can but a better house in the USA for a much price and the dollar is at parity.
2. Move to areas not much affected by the recession and where jobs are still there. CNN had an article list 100 great cities not affected by the recession. It is hard for an American to move, but for you it is easy.
3. Report to the CRA that you will be a resident for tax purpose (and work in a low level job for the time being). so this will enable you not only to use the food stamps in the USA but also your Tax liability will be Nil. Your child tax benefit from Caanda will come to USA. Also as you will not be working, you will get no healthcare coverage in the USA. Use your Canadian health card and come to Canada for any treatment.
Note that this is only untill you get a good job. Once you get it, you can forget Canada.
4. If you work for some 10 quarters in the USA and file taxes, then you will be eligible for social security and that it like a jackpot (remember that USA social security will get bankrupt soon. I hope that you will be eligible for payments from it before it gets bankrupt).
5. I heard from one of my friends that supply teachers (no qualification needed) are in great demand in the USA and that the pay is great. There are some agencies which supply , supply teachers.
6. USA is a very less rasict country that Canada. so you will enjoy it.
7. Avoid New Jersy or any areas with Indian IT people in large numbers. You canot survive there. Choose areas where they have a high regard for Indians or have never seen any Indians. This means, never open a takeout in NJ and the like. You will bankrupt yourself.
8. Prices are much cheaper in USA as you know. You will get a bigger bang for your buck.
9. your children can always come back for (Free !) higher education in this country.
My Worry :
My only worry is that, you came to Canada and struggled and made a name for yourself and now you know what Canada is all about. May be you lost a few years because of that. Now again, you need to sell your house, choose a correvt location and job , buy everything fromscratch etc... You may lose a few months in this but in the long run it is very good.
Conclusion : Please leave this cursed frozen land ASAP !
all the very best.
Now over to you Desi Tiger
Peace

What more can I say than what's already been said
Fare thee well my friend. You are going to a better place

Microsoft - Which end of the stick do you want today?
"America rewards those who dare to dream, and dare to try"
I'll second that...
Here in Canada you need the "Executive Presence" more and less Talent to shine and move up in the organization

What's wrong with Canada, u r here for so many years
I would like to thank everyone who took the trouble of replying. I agree that there are downsides to living here as opposed to being in the US. That being said, I was looking to hear about specific advantages in the US. The main reason I invited my Desi brothers & sisters to was this - it is always a good idea to get opinions from a wide spectrum of people.
That way, I can be nearly sure that what I heard about the good life in the US, is not untrue. I hope to hear more from you about this.
Thanks, once again!!
