I am a Canadian citizen that has been here for 10 years. A close family member had sponsored my application for a US green card, which is just a few months away.
Life here in Canada, has been a mixed bag, but being a die-hard optimist, I have tried hard (and succeeded) in not focusing on the adversities I faced here.
That being said, it does appear to be a good idea to move to the US (despite the recession, and 9 % unemployment). I have discussed the matter with disinterested people (rather people, who can view the matter in an unbiased manner).
Most of them have suggested that on the long run, it would benefit me to move to the US.
I invite opinions and suggestions especially from my fellow desis who have lived both in the US and here, about the pros and cons of moving there. That would prepare myself mentally for those situations.
By the way, some of the most things that are attractive are : Low auto insurance premiums, lower rents, taxes, grocery and gasoline prices etc.
I am not particularly worried about being out of work for long, and I have several of my next of kin there.
Thanks in advance for your replies.
Congratulations and good that you have someone who sponsored for GC.
If you have Green Card, go for it. I cannot think of single thing that is better in Canada than that is there in US. If you did good in Canada then you will do best in US.
The question seems more to make others envy or to show-off than to really get an opinion. (Based on fact that you applied for GC and you have several of your keens prolly doing good and no one is willing to move to Canada etc).
Good luck!

Manswerwadekar: Thank you for the input. The idea of inviting other's opinions on this forum is simply to get an overall picture of what lies ahead.
I understand that each person has a different take on what one perceives as "Good" and "Not so good".
I intend to get mentally conditioned or "used" to the idea of those things that many not be considered "ideal" in Uncle sam's land.
After all, the US is not without it's issues.
Thanks once again.
Not so ideal in uncle sam's land could still be very ideal here in Canada...In other words the things that probably considered as not ideal in in US, here in Canada they are already worst (e.g. Verizon still does not provide iphones ).
How many Desis (GC or US Passport holders) migrated from US to Canada? Barring frustrated visa holders you would probably have to do massive hunt to find some.
But every year you will find thousand of canucks getting settled in US till they get retired (This land is good for retirees because of healthcare and single moms because they get the most of the benfits). Who pays for these policies hardworking middle aged couples. Not saying that these are bad but I think middle class unnecessarily share the major burdon of politicians, Government and Unions.
Whereas in US you earn as you have capabilities and willingness.
9 % unemployment? NO. Its more than 10% but uncle sam refuses to accept the real numbers.
That aside, what u say is true abt GC, then go for it. U always have the fallback with Canada. If your relative is sponsoring (family I guess), then u have good support. Every country has it own +ves and -ves. Please be aware of the health ins since it would be the most imp aspect of your life in US. Taxes vary on where u live. Some states dont have state income tax.
All the best!
