DesiBabu
Congratulations.
I think your post will make more sense if you are a bit more specific as to how and what job you got.

1. What were you doing in India?
2. What kind of job you were looking for In Toronto
3. What "exactly" YMCA did to facilitate the job search
and
4. What kind of job you found and what kind of company it is.
Thanks

Hi All,

Thanks for your good wishes!

to answer your queries:

Mishtar India: I was in the pharmaceutical industry, international business development.

Chor_per_mor:

1: see above
2: I was looking for a similar job with a pharmaceutical company
3: Well, YMCA NIC was basically a place to go and access the internet and search for jobs. In addition they had books listing recruiters, books giving interview tips, books on industry specific companies. I also would like to mention that one should also see 'WHO's HIRING IN 2004' - this gives companies currently recruiting.
4: I am now working for a pharma company, in global business development.

Good luck to all!

Regards,

DB

:)

Thanks, now it makes more sense.
Surprisingly every one else raced to congratulate without even knowing what kind of jobs are in demand in Canada.
It is not unheard of people getting a job offer even before they leave India...this despite the fact that they dont have any Canadian experience. This is not because of attitude but a host of factors such as suitability of that particular person to particular job, relevent experience etc.
And so far this YMCA and other agencies are concerned, they can only provide very limited help in my opinion. before I came to canada, I spent as many as 6 days in Canadian Consulate in Bombay, noting down all the info about Canada I could find including names, addresses and Phone/fax numbers of at least 500 employers in the field I was interested in. Wrote, faxed and contacted almost every single one of them. Got dozens of replies ............all stating that I am too overqualified or that they will contact later or other usual crap which in plain english means lack of canadian experience.

The key to understand this is that desis
1. Need to bring in lots of money so that they dont run to first available odd job. But sit at home and do the homework before launching the assault. You atre a sitting duck if you enter canada without enough money to live easily for almost a year or if you start a labour job right away
2. Must know what factors work against new immigrants of south asian origin and work on them.
3. Going to all these agencies that provide immigrants with some info is very painful, slow and can be done by only someone who has lots of patience and money. You cant expect to work at a warehouse all day and expect to do job search at the same time
