Our Indian passports are expiring in Dec 2011. If we were to visit America for a week in Jul/Aug, would we face problems entering?

Assuming you have a valid visa to enter, you should be ok. The travel database states:
"Passport required.
- Nationals of India may enter with passports valid for period
of intended stay."
Your I-94, if you do not have one yet, might be issued for a shorter duration than the normal 6 months.

Check with US Immigration website. What is harm in getting the passport renewed in advance if not sure?
