Hi Guys,
I am a canadian PR holder. i will be travelling to canada in first week of Dec 2007
My Indian passport is valid till Jan 2008. Do you think i should renew my passport india only or should i wait and get it renewed in canada.
Do you see a problem if i travel to canada with my passport expiring in Jan 2008. I have been in canada before and have a valid PR card.
Eagerly waiting for your inputs
thanks.
EDIT: NEED UR LOCATION. Are you in India right now?? If yes, then you must renew it in India, to avoid any complications.
============================================
I had a different situation like this:
My passport was expiring in 3 weeks when I went home (to India frm Canada) a few months back... called both canadian n Indian immigration, they had no probems...
Went to India. Applied for a new passport under Tatkal scheme (U need to reach passport office early, so that they will give u new one the same day...), and came back to canada.
MAKE SURE YOU GET THE OLD PASSPORT BACK, AS IT HAS UR ARRIVAL STAMP, AND THE CUSTOMS/IMMIGRATION AT INDIAN AIRPORT WILL ASK TO SEE PROOF OF YOUR ARRIVAL.
yes warrior currently i am in India but would be travelling in the next 10 days or so.
My passport expires in jan so i still have a month. Any issues in canada? i have a valid PR
Can u throw some light on tatkal and the location from where u got ur passport renewed. How fast is the tatkal service.
thanks
Go to regional passport office which is mentioned on ur passport in the early morning, there will be agents outside with forms (no need, but if u r not familiar, u can get ur form filled by them). Fill out forms, make sure u mark in the form ur current passport to be returned, attach it with ur form and submit it in the Tatkal counter, U will get ur new passport in the afternoon, sameday or else the next day.
I think, Canada or even some airlines may deny u entry, if ur passport is not valid for the next six months (I mean travelling from India to another country, not to India with Indian passport).
In my case, I was going to India, so this six month rule didn't apply.
Anyway, make sure, call ur airlines, airport or immigration
really can they do that.
I think they have issues if you go for visa stamping, if u have a visa stamping most of the countries want to make sure that u have a passport valid for atleast 6 months or if ur visiting a country on tourist, work etc
In this case i am returning to a country, canada of which i am a permanent resident so not sure.
Can you provide me some links where u have read this, i tried to search this on http://www.cic.gc.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK but could not get something.
Right now i am in U.P and coz of the serial blasts here i want to avoid a new passport. i have a US visa stamped too on my passport and hence want to avoid any paperwork in India etc
If someone is reading this would like to hear from them too.
thanks.
Do not worry about your US Visas or any other Visas - you can always attach the new passport to the old one (mine was attached by default by the Indian Embassy ) .
Please try to get this done in your Passport Office over the next one week if possible as you can avoid risk of any kind , though I sincerely feel that you may not have any problems since you are a Permanent Resident of Canada .
I suggest go and meet the Passport Officer or his deputy yourself w/o any Agent s intervention and ask them about the procedure . They can recommend if tatkal (out of turn) is needed .

Fido.
thanks fido.
Actually i have already been to the passport office and according to them it should take atleast 10 days for processing even under TATKAl, secondly there have been blasts in U.P recently so things are not great.
What am i looking for is some link/documentation about the guidelines.
i found this website
http://skyteam.com/EN/travelPlanner/timatic/index.jsp
If you plug in that ur PR holder coming to canada it just mentions.
CANADA (CA)
Passport or Canadian Certificate of Identity required.
Visa not required, if holding proof of previous admittance
for permanent or temporary residence, such as:
- Permanent Resident Card; or
- Counterfoil document (similar to Canadian visa) affixed
to passport.
Passport issued to alien residents does not require an entry
endorsement, provided an ID number is listed below the place
of issue abroad (not applicable to passports issued in
Chinese Taipei.
Even if you plug in visitor for canada, it just mentions passport shoul dbe valid for duration of stay and not about the 6 month rule.
Let meknow if you have some links/documentation here.
