My/our passports are expiring in May 2008.
How early I can apply for a new passport at CGI Toronto?
Is there a time limit or time frame that I should follow?
I was thinking of applying next week itself. Can I do that ?
Thanks in advance...
you can apply within 6 months of the passport expiry date.

Hi Fredie,
Thanks for the reply.
I did check the websites but nothing on the timelines.
as I said earlier the passports (mine and family ) are expiring on May 2008.
That is the reason I do not want to wait till May ' 08 and then apply for passports.
The other question do they cancel the old passports after issuing the new ones?
Can I still use them until the last day whil travelling between USA/Canada?
Also do the consulate in Toronto, answer phone calls?
I will call them today ans see what their opinion is.
Thx again.
There are a few phone numbers on their website in TORONTO 416 960 0751 // 0752 // 416 960 4831 // 416 960 8173 and also an e-mail <cgindia@cgitoronto.ca> and the best bet will be to write an e-mail if none of the numbers respond to incoming calls. Start with the e-mails then you will have a black and white copy.
Each Passport office has a special mode of cancelling and they will adhere to it. But before mailing please do take a copy of all of the pages if you so desire. After canceling they will either punch a hole in it or cut the corners or just leave a few useful pages uncut as per their requirements. So far they have never held the old Passports back.
These Passports will be needed, some time in the future by you, yourself and OF COURSE your progeny TOO. It will be need for some proof of, landing or you being a parent for their (CPP) pension and OAS, and PIO too. You haven't hit the cross roads as yet. But you will be needing the same and so will your kids. Hang on to them like your dear life.
Certainly the visas and other entries in them will be still valid and if they cut the corners, they will leave the ones that are valid, by not cutting them.
A try to contact them will be the simplest way to get an answer. But some times things don't work that way. Hence the e-mail angle.
You start preparing for the renewal regardless what they say, that way you are ahead of the game. You certainly are on top of these things I see.
Good Luck.
Freddie.
Hi,
I just finished calling all numbers and an email as well.
I will wait to see if they reply.
By the way I have completely digitized all my essential docs, like pps, and all other credentials, etc. so no problems on that front.
If I can use the old passport until the exact expiry date it would be the best for me , since I can use the passport fo to and fro travel to USA ( H1 Visa), other wise I am sure I have to get it stamped immeidately on the new passport
That is only my concern, I know I have to do that at some point, but if they cancel the old pp then it has to simulataneous and then the other things like getting appts at US consulates etc, .... you know what I am talking .
So a big headache coming.. straight on me.
thx again for your inputs
