Having lurked around here for a while now, I get the impression that a lot of desis who were in the US on H1 are moving to Canada as PR. I also feel that this trend is not too old. Of course, I have also seen a few posts fromCanadian PRs who have moved to the US on H1 or TN, but in comparison they are a tiny fraction. So, what's the deal actually? When I had come to Canada in 1998, the IT bubble was going along just fine and people were moving from India to the US in droves. And as I learnt then, most were quite confident of managing their green cards before the expiry of H1. In fact I even personally know a couple who did that. I am aware things changed a lot post 2000 IT bubble burst, but how did that change the green card issue. Have the employers become reticent in sponsoring for GC? Why?

The employers are still prudent in filing GC's but the GC process is taking a lot of time (avg 3-4 years) , so it is better to have a safe status as a PR in Canada then a hanging one in uncertainty in US

I know it takes 3-4 years. But isn't the H1 valid for 3 years and then renewable for another 3? That gives 6 years to get a the GC.

I think it is still within the 6 year limit, but thats a long long time to wait.
The more important question is can you be in the same job for that amount of time and with the same company?

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
You have to pay a heavy price to get your green card namely
1) Go 6 years without buying any real estate due to uncertainty
2) You live in fear because if u get laid off if u dont find a job within 10 days u have to leave the country
3) You are not eligible for unemployment benefit
4) UNless u are fortunate employers tend to screw with u by giving u a measly raise
5) Travel to other countries is restricted as compared to when u have a Canadian passport
6) If u are laid off and by some luck u get another job you have to begin the process all over again (there are exceptions though)
7) Even after getting green card u have to spend 6 months in the country to retain u status.
Given all these I have never regretted my decision to come to Canada

Dont want to stray off topic on this but....
I agree that taxation levels are high in Canada, but if u are in a State in the US which is heavily taxed like I was and if u count the insurance premiums u have to pay for medical dental then the amount which is withheld from your paycheck does not differ by much and at least in Canada what u contribute to CPP will be ultimately paid back to u but in the US whatever I paid for SS is down the drain. Does anybody know if I can be paid Soc Scurity in US as well because I worked there for 7 years before coming to Canada.
