You do not have a choice. You have to ask your family doctor for a referral.

On the same note, does anyone know how to find an obstetrician for someone (6-7 months pregnent) moving from another province to Ontario? What is the process to find a family doctor and Obs/Gyn. at that stage and register for the delivery in any GTA hospital? How easy/hard is it, and what are the challenges involved? Also, what are the good hospitals for child birth in terms of pre and post natal care?

Any responses and help to the above is very much appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance.

It's a tough job! We went through that. Getting a family doc is easy. They will refer, but many OB/GYN won't accept new patients that late in pregnancy. Luckily got one 6 weeks after the referral! Other option is to keep going to the family doc and walk into emergency when the time comes!

If you are getting a OB/GYN, you don't have a choice of the hospital. You go to where the doc tells you - where he/she has privileges.

I think you can ask for delivery at home through a registered nurse or midwife ( if it is a simple case ) .

No, I don't want to rely upon emergency. May be, in the worst to worst case scenario. But to start with I think I have to find a family doc/walk-in that could refer to the obs/gyn. We will take it from there.

Is there anyway, I could call some obs/gyn in the GTA and inquire whether they could take in the case during that critical juncture? I think I can try calling few, and see no harm in that.

Thanks all.

I am in the same situation as yours. i am going to toronto just for the delivery process since all my family is there. i m currently living in saskatchwan. i can not find any family doctor that will accept saskatchwan residents. the doctor that we are seeing in regina is ready to send all the paper work to the doctor in toronto and accoording to her...everything is looking okay so far. my wife is 5 months pregnant.
The one doctor that i called said the reason that they dunt take patients is because they dunt have a software to bill the saskatchwan heath authority.
