Hi,
My current employer is transferring me to Canada from USA for 6-8 months because of green card issue.
I live in east coast and I am in IT industry my workpermit is filed and if it approves, I will be working in Toronto or may be Work from home most of the time. I have below questions regarding move:
1. Is it worth moving 1 BR apartment furniture from Connecticut to Toronto? Can I hire u Haul and take it to Canada. What could be the problem at customs?
2. I have a car which I am using since last 4 years. Do I need to register my CAR in Canada and get Canadian license and Insurance? Or US License and Insurance can be acceptable for sometime ( 6-8 months ).
Please advise.
Answer 1: I think problem at costum will depend on what status you are entering in Canada and what you tell them about your intentions on living in Canada. You can do the uhaul idea but I would say it will be costlier option. Get it shipped if you can.
Answer 2: You can drive for 6 to 8 months with US licence and insurance.
I would suggest you that if you are planning to move then never give any money at delivery point before, until you self inspect all your goods are really delivered in safe conditions or not. So, it will help you to make financial pressure on Packers and Movers Company to solve the problem if arises.
I will be on the Work Permit and current intention is to stay in Canada for 6-8 months. I have LED TV which I bought in last November. ( 6 Months Old ). Remaining all furniture is used. Any idea, how duty will be calculated.
Also, I would appreciate if you can suggest the Movers who can help in moving from CT to Toronto.
Where do I find information whether I need to pay custom/import duty for Car and whether my US license and insurance will work or not.
Please suggest.
