Hi Guys,
Firstly I would like to congratulate you for running this forum for Canadian desi's. I went through so many threads to obtain relevant information about Canada. Hats Off.
I need your sincere advice.
- I am currently in the states making good money (around 140k) but on H1B, however GC in US is in process and expected to take around 5 years (Read unlimited) time.
- I applied for a job here in Canada and got thru a Crown Corporation (Related to finance). They are paying around 100K CDN in Ottawa.
I am so torn between money in the short term v/s potential benefits of citizenship (Landed PR but never lived in Canada). Would it be a wise decision to take a pay cut of 40K in favor of stability/Eventual citizenship? (probably losing around 160K if we look at 4 years). However one upside is my wife my get some work (IT) in ottawa but looking at generic trends on "Canadian Experience" and other job market factors, getting her a job would be tall order as compared to US where a degree would probably help her get a job straight away.
That being said i don't know how is the work in crown corporations here. As in general I do not know of the work culture in Canada (Assuming its same as the US). Are there layoff's in crown corporations (basically saying that stability for me is a myth?)
Would appreciate if people can chip in with some advice.... Thanks in advance.
(Sorry about being so indecisive but losing 40K per year v/s the lure of citizenship is proving too difficult to decide)
Dude,
Choice is very simple.
Remember ' a bird in hand is worth thousand in bush'.
With the US recession, GC applications has piled up. So it will be hard for you to get GC soon.
Take the Cdn. job and stay here for 4 years. At the end of 4 years you will get a Cdn passport and then your options will be unlimited. You can go to USA or any of the 160 countries in the world. You citizenship will help you.
Also remember that Crown corporations also have retrenchment but they seldom touch IT workers. First to go will be people on work permit. However the pace of retrenchment in Crown corporation will be negligible.
Peace

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
Unfortunately, such decision can only be made by you.
Strictly from a monetary perspective, you are better off in the US. Pretty much everything is more expensive than in the US starting with the auto insurance which would be a nice sticker shock. Therefore, not only you have a reduced income, but also higher expenses.
Strictly from a stability point of view, although no jobs offer long term security anymore, you will no longer be tied to H1. You are free to pursue anything you want as a Cdn PR. Within 4 to 5 years, you have the ability to gain Cdn citizenship.
If you move to Canada with an expectation of everything being same/similar as that of the USA, then there might be some disappointment. If you move knowing you are moving to another country, your move would be smoother. Having said that, work culture and other things tend to be similar.
Also, be fully aware of the ground work required to move - importing a car (you cannot move a car that has a lien), obtaining DL, plates, insurance, housing, etc, etc, etc.
Best wishes to you.

oh BTW, if you decide not to come, do not hesitate to drop a note about the position you had applied for....a lot of folks on this forum would be happy including the one who is actively looking for IT job.
But if you decide to come, welcome to Canada!
Thanks guys. Really appreciate the responses.
I am really in a fix and looks like the opinion is split between the CDs as well.
As for me, actually I am not in IT, I work in Finance. Would be joining the primary banking regulator in Canada as opposed to a well known consulting company I work for now.
Alrighty...I second the opinion posted by Dimple. One thing is for sure, stability and social life is definitely better here than that in US. You will rarely find any downtown that is dangerous. Lay offs are somewhat not as scary as that in US..in fact after a few years of service some folks volutarily take RIF because something called as employment equity which is unknown in US. And obviously, as TK would Vehemently agree, we all work for government here. So the safest jobs are in govt and moreover crown is the safest among rest of the Govt jobs.
On the flip side, having experience of solid finance company would give you job anywhere in the world. Even in the country as conservative country as Canada, where so called "Canadian Experience" is conveniently must.
Since you seem young and capable, I would take the risk of staying there with that salary, save as much for retirement, and then after gaining a lotz of "US" experience you are a free bird!
