My parents are going back home - Ahmedabad in couple of month.. We booked flight with Jet Airways from Toronto - London - Bombay - Ahmedabad...

quick questions:

is immigration process is going to be done at Bombay or Ahmedabad?

anybody in forum who has a first hand experience?

what company is the connecting flight from Bombay to Ahmedabad ??

if it is JET than it would be at Ahmedabad

Was at Ahmedabad for my family before 2 years & was at Baroda for my wife's family last year...

Yes, they should receive luggage in Ahemedabad, if it is Jet Airways. The most notorious is Air-India. You have to pick-up the luggage and check back again.

Generally speaking , its the first port of entry in a country where you meet immigration. Thereafter it is considered domestic.

I recall we once traveled to Halifax through Montreal ..We had to do the customs / immigration @ Montreal , collect our luggage and check it back in on the flight to Montreal .

Wonder why it is different for Jet Airways ?

You were right in asking. But the Airlines have their own reasons and so will tell you where the Customs and Immigration clearance will take place and if you ask them they will also tell you the reason for doing it.

But you don't want to know this, Till about a few months ago, they used to follow a system called Manifests on Airlines and Cruise ships. They are converting these into an Electronic system very shortly. It is a very important document for them, which gave them the List of Passengers and the List Cargo that they carry on board. Based upon the first Port of Landing or the Port of call, they determine to conduct the checks and the shore based crew gather at the arrival port, get ready to do the checks and clearances. These locations are determined according to the availability of facilities for Landing, such as International Airports, or Deep Water Ports for the Very Large Ships.

Everything will go ELECTRONIC from 15th of July This year. These Manifests with all of the Names Addresses etc., of the people who arrived in Canada were used to determine the arrival of an Individual or of a Family's Entry into Canada and people who were into Genealogy or searching for their Ancestry and the ROOTS depended upon and relied on these facts.

You may turn around and ask me what has that got to do with the Customs Check in Mumbai? If and When a Very Big Airport gets designated as an International Airport and the Planes Start and Terminate their TRIP at such an airport,, you will see the NUMBER or the nomenclature start and stop with that Air Port. Like the FLIGHT Number etc.,And that calls for the end of the journey for that plane on that route. So, they schedule all of the formalities at that Air Port. Hence the Customs and Immigration Formalities there.
