Hydro refers to your electricity bill only (from Toronto Hydro).

For an apartment in the central Toronto area, we typically pay fixed charges of about $28 bi-monthly (ie $14 per month). The other charges are variable and depend on your consumption.

Check out this link, if you want to understand what the charges work out to:

Michelle

You would not typically pay a separate bill for water in an apartment building, would be included in your rental amount. Your water consumption would be metered and billed once you move to a house.

I’m not really well informed as far as water bills are concerned, however, if you know your typical consumption from wherever you’ve lived in the past, you can check out the following link for water charges from the city of Toronto.

Michelle

Some additional info that may be of relevance if your hydro (electricity) consumption is metered

Your first bill could include a ‘deposit’ of $200 that is recovered from new consumers. Be prepared for that. If you move and no longer need a separate meter, this amount will be refunded to you in full.

For regular billing, you can opt to receive an e-bill. Eliminates the paper bill, so you don’t have any problems with the bill getting lost in the mail, etc. You get an email notification when the bill is prepared (in most cases this is bi-monthly).

When you have your Toronto Hydro contract number, you can also set up the bill payment on your bank account. When you get your e-bill every month, you can log into your online bank account, and pay the bill off electronically.

i am shortly moving into a new apartment. thanks for the info it helped me estimate the costs before getting in.

another quick question. i believe that they have gas heating system out there. what if it gets tooo hot inside. they dont have a regulator.

have people survived without a regulator inside the apt. or do they just close the vents. i know it sounds wierd but i am worried about being too hot inside there...:)

i would appreciate some insights from any one out there...
