Especially the one already mixed with spices and ready to drink after mixing in a glass of water.....

Sattoo power drink
Like yoga, i feel if sattoo is introduced in the west it will be a big hit.
You can make sattoo at home , take roasted barley and grind it to fine powder...and you have sattoo
Now do what you want with it , mix in a drink or mix with spices.
imagine sattoo being sold in Tim Horton's or Loblaws !!!

Sattoo, as I know it, started in olden times by travellers who would leave their homes for a faraway place in search of work/business or any other personal matter. In places like Rajathan, where it has always been a desert, there was no way of being able to find food, let alone cook it. therefore, the travellers used to take with them Sattoo - which was originally a mixture of atta (of wheat or chana), sugar and at times Ghee. Ghee was used to bind atta and sugar and provide nutrients to body, while sugar was to provide instant energy. People who did not take ghee, or did not like to take the bound form of sattoo, took just a mixture of atta and sugar with some spices, and all they had to do was to pour it into a glass of water (as we do till today with so many instant drinks!!!), and that became a full meal.
In my family, we wait one full year to eat that Sattoo - our favourite home made desert, which for us is prepared on teej of (which) Indian month (my wife's not here right now or would have asked her!). In our version, it is mixture of atta, sugar, and ghee - all in equal quantities - which means for each kilo of atta, there is one kilo of sugar and one kilo of ghee - so you can imagine how 'caloriefying' this desert must be. For chana, we use the roasted chana, and we also use the ground rice (chawal ka atta!)
We just finished our first lot of this year a few days ago - and my children are waiting for the day my wife will prepare one more lot!

Thanks for the insights Chandresh, i had no idea sattoo is popular in other parts of india as well. Tho I have travelled all over india (except north east) i only found it in Bihar and part of UP adjoining bihar. It amazes me how different cultures in different states in india are all linked by common traditions and even food .
Some more factoids on Sattoo
- It probably is one of the oldest "original" indian food forms, and finds references in history books as well.
-highly versatile, can be used from Sattoo ka paratha to sattoo ka laddoo to sattoo drink. And comes in variety of cereal grains.
-But despite its goodness it remains a poors mans food enjoyed mostly in rural areas. Guess someone somewhere with entrepreneurial ( spell check!!) spirit can bring it to the mainstream and make it a hit.
What a great start to a fine friday morning with a discussion on "Sattoo"
hehe
Happy friday everyone !!
