Wrong analogy. Look at it like this. I have to go from Point A to Point B. There is a map available on the counter that gives complete details. There is also a man sitting there who charges Rs 10,000 and offers to read the map and tell me how to get there. I choose the second alternative.

What impression of myself do I convey?

makes sense to me!

DtC --

I guess we are going round in circles.
I don't see any problem with someone who decided to use a good consultant simply to offload the paperwork and the background work to buy peace of mind.
That doesn't convey any negative impression to me.

At the same time, I don't see any problem with someone who decides to do all the legwork himself to either (1) save money or (2) avoid a consultant who screws up.

I have seen enough of both cases - the Do-It-Yourself types who tried to save themselves a few $$$ and ended up screwing their case badly and also those who hired a bad consultant who screwed up the case.

I am sorry I don't see the connection here.
Deciding to have a professional handle something for you doesn't meant that you are lazy or incompetent.

I know a lot of people who have done the process thru immigration consultants and are well settled now.

One of my closest friends here in Canada used an immigration consultant although he was more than competent to do all the paperwork on his own - he is now well settled in Canada for 3 years.

In fact, I have a very close friend who is using a very famous immigration law firm and has recently filed his case - he will probably get his visa sometime next year through the visa post.

He is a very successful CPA and has a fairly straightforward case - I don't see how using an immigration consultant badly reflects on his chances of success - you are reading too much into it.

IMHO, of course - immigraton consultants are taking an undeserved sting.

I think the key here is "straight forward":D

The application form along with the brochure are pretty well designed/written. There are no trick questions as such. There is not too much scope for interpretation.

So, if you have a "straight forward" situation, going to the consultant is more or less equal to throwing $2,000 down the drain. :)

Let's leave this issue to rest as there will always be people with opposite views. What is good for GOOSE may not be good for GANDER!

Someone who needs a \"consultant\" to immigrate should NOT immigrate!!

IMHO that is!!

Yes DTC I agree with you.
