From those CDs who have already appeared for an interview at the US consulate in Toronto, please advise :

1. Thier appointment letter says that electronic items powered by battery viz. cameras, cell phones etc..are not allowed inside the Consulate building - is this very strictly enforced with regards to cell phones? Cant imagine life without a cell phone even for 2-3 hrs..;) :D

2. For an interview on a friday - knowing that there is a queue to enter the consulate building, what should be the best time to reach there to have the shortest possible wait in the queue and make it to the door/counter before the scheduled time... I believe they do not schedule interview beyond 2.00 pm hence the queue will already be short around 12.30 or so..however would like to have expert advise.

3. I have an account with FEDEX - can I use the account number to receive my passport via fedex?

Thanx for your inputs in advance.

rgds,
Hiren

1) They are very strict about the cell phones and other electronic items. Even though i did not carry one that was the first thing they asked.

2) Any time you go it takes time. Ofcourse i guess it also depends on the day , it took me 2 1/2 -3 hours to complete the process.

3) Guess you can use it , they have the forms from Fed-ex in the waiting area. So in that form you can put your account number, but you can call Fed-ex to find out in detail.

4) You will need, i guess a 5 dollar bill to get a photo (there is a machine inside the waiting area) if you need a photo for the visa documents.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Puttoo for the info.
I plan to take my photos with me, thats not an issue.
How was the interview and what did they look for? I guess you did get the VISA. I am applying for B1/B2 - if other CDs have any particular advise for this category.

I have been refused B1 visa from India in 2002 - does this need to be mentioned?

My experience here wsa good with the consulate. I went twice, once my visa & the secong time for my wife & kid. Both the times they were quite nice & friendly.

I was refused a student visa way back in 1993, i did mention it to the visa officer. Infact I had the letter they gave on refusal of visa and i showed it to her...... she was surprised that i still had it.

Anyway my feeling is that the visa depends, a lot of time on the mood of the visa officer.

I had letter from my company explaining why i was going to US. Plus i carried my bank documents. But they did not check my bank documnets. However when my wife went for the visa ( i was also with ther at that time), the visa officer asked for a letter showing where i was working. I did not have it, but i had my pay slips & i showed it to her .... she was satisfied.

As a precaution take whatever documnets you have to show your link.

As i said it depends on the visa officer mood. My wife had an invitation letter from her uncle ..... they did not even ask for it.

I had to call 900 number to book an urgent appointment. I had a very sad reason for booking an urgent appointment and guess what, US consulate did not charge me for 900 number call till date. It has been over 2 months now. I got a very good helping response from Consulate of India @ Toronto as my Passport had expired. It took 2 hours for me to get passport issued from Consulate of India.

Lying during the interview is a good reason for refusal.. They have all you info on file including over stays and refusals..

If u have a canadian PR getting a US visitors visa is easy if u have not broken any US immigration laws

Thanks for the advise. My intention was not to lie, but how far long (in the past) do you need to mention in the application?.

Anyways, thanks for all the advices, I already gave the interview and got the visa for 10 yrs.
