A recent thread prompted me to post this, if you're around on CD a lot, you know which one I'm talking about. 
I'd like to get your thoughts on CD moderation. Would love to hear your balanced feedback on what is good (if you feel anything is) and what isn't or needs improvement.
Some ground rules for feedback
1. Keep it objective and not personal.
2. Recognize that moderation isn't any of the current team's full time job, all mods volunteer time for this.
3. It is not possible to please everyone.
In a couple of weeks, I'll summarize the feedback/recommendations and outline a plan to roll those out where feasible.
To prevent all kinds of ad-hoc aliases being created hijack this thread and to keep the focus constructive, one of the conditions for you to be able to contribute to this thread is you must have at least 100 posts on CD already and must have posted something in the last 30 days. Please do not post if you don't meet this criteria.

There are discussion forums like "craigslist" that are un-moderated. If you are unfamiliar with this site, check it out and you will see what I mean. Unmoderated is like a world without rules. It is chaos. There is nothing useful on those forums.
In all the time that I have been here, I have never seen an unfair post or calling out of someone by any Mod that wasnt warranted. I've been on the receiving end of some reminders myself. Im glad to see people giving their valuable and free time to ensure the site remains high quality.
I would like Mods to be more visible in discussions. That is my only suggestion.

Moderator similar to a referee has a higher role to play and although difficult should try to maintain an indifferent stance . Due to the badge he/she displays his views on any issue as a moderator are taken in a more binding manner , quite similar to a referee / umpire . Sometimes , going against the mod's personal opinion may make him / her prejudiced - this kind of restricts member's freedom .
At other times when the mod/s wish to participate as members , it becomes confusing whether the views displayed are from the 'moderator's ' view or from a 'member' who wishes to participate . If the Mod can have a separate role / id as a member , it can do away with this confusion and help other members participate freely .
Again wishful thinking and a lot of gray areas but if some points can be adhered to commonly for all .... it can add on to effective moderation . Supervise the discussions non judgmentally and intervene if people cross the norms who ever they may be w/o prejudice .
Its difficult to be non judgmental but the mod's role is also above most. Like a teacher above the taught .

My two cents:
Take measures. Action on posts by members that are against the rules. Stick it to them and stick to it. I am sure each offender has some lame reason, some lame excuse. Have none of it.
Set a threshold for warnings. 3 strikes and you are out...or along those lines perhaps? If not permanently, have some sort of temporary ban so the offending member can cool off for a bit and think about all the stupid unworthy comments he/she has made.
Leniency is always exploited. Be stringent.

Another suggestion would be that people should not make personal comments or post ir relevantly on threads (esp if it is vindictive ) .... we can see a couple of members entering threads just to take pot shots ...... this should be discouraged by the mods ..... If one does not wish to participate objectively , why try to hijack the thread .... or make out of line posts ........ there may be others who are intersted ......... And if no one is interested , the thread will die on its own ...... lets maintain common ettiquettes . The mods can regulate such nature .
'....set of jokes to share ....s is a prime example of a long running thread restricted to a few members for their interest . No harm there and no offence taken .... but if someone enters that thread just for taking pot shots , things can and generally become uglier .
