Things are heating up between China and India over the Malacca straits. India is starting to make a presence there thanks to its military base in the Nicobar islands.

China feels the straits should be solely in China's sphere of influence. As a result, China is building bases in Myanmar, Iran and Pakistan.

However, these moves are much like Russian/English maneuvers during "the Great Game". The two countries would probably never come to war.

However, were China and India to declare war, it would be a unique conflict, never before seen in history; the battle would be electronic, fought on the internet, in space and in distant islands since the two countries are separated by the Himalayas.

There is little incentive for India and China to fight a war. Both economies are growing at almost 8-10%

Both countries have a flourishing bi-lateral trade. There is no economic incentive for both sides to fight a war. China recently recognized sikkim to be part of India .

Right now, China, Japan and USA would like India to be their ally due to strategic and economic reasons.

I agree, it probably won't happen. Traditionally, both countries have been inward looking. I don't know Indian history very well, but I think it could be claimed that India has not invaded a foreign country in 1,000 years (the wars with Pakistan are more like civil wars than anything else).

And despite US paranoia, the Chinese have no desire to attack foreign countries (except for regaining Chinese territory, such as Taiwan) and in any case, they have no power to project force over any distance. Their navy is not a blue water navy, they have no aircraft carriers, etc.

However, it is interesting to speculate on what would happen.

The Chinese could send a force over the Himalayas as they did during the Sino Indian War in 65 (or 63?). However, it would be a small force and would probably be without armor. Looking at a map it seems that there are a number of rivers between China and New Delhi so i wonder how much headway they could make.

China has purchased part of Kashmir from the Pakistanis; could they move through this area into India? (I myself am not sure).

The determining factor is that China's oil must pass by India by sea, and China has no means of protecting its sealines of communication. This would end any war within a few months. (I doubt if Chinese oil reserves could last much longer)

Indian software engineers at Microsoft would, in the event of war, launch an all out attack on Chinese websites. Who knows what damage they could do... (maybe a software engineer here could tell me).

Newspapers often sensationalistically talk about the world's two largest powers (nuclear powers at that) going to war but the reality is that it would be very difficult to carry out a war... and it would not be in anyone's interests, as you say.
