Hi Parmarkn/ All experienced desis
I see Sr desis asking your opinions for life in interiors, is it that even after living in TO you do not get chance to see about life elsewhere?
For aspiring immigrants like us , how do you suggest we should go about of checking venues alternate to TO?
Can anybody guide on the issue?

calgary rocks... mostly because of the rockies :)

the fishing is great, the food is great (if you eat stuff besides dosa's that is).. the people are nice, and buying a house in calgary does not cost an arm and a leg... i love being able to start up the car and be hiking in the mountains during summer or take a weekend ski trip in winter in just over an hour and a half...

if heaven does exist, im sure its a ski resort...

Hi Bighead,

As you are in Calgary, can you possibly send me some info./links to job sites, rental properties, etc. for Calgary? Instead of TO, I am planning to land in Calgary. Howz the cost of living in Calgary, demand for primary & pre-primary teachers, and hospital systems.
I am sure they are better than TO.

Let me know. Also, are odd jobs easily available there?

Hi to all Calgary Desis,

Please respond to the questionnaires regarding the life, cost of living, jobs and job market for Engineers, expected average salaries for new immigrants etc in Calgary. Very little info is circulated about placed other than GTA on this website.

Your replies will be highly appreciated.

Thanks & Regards

ETH

for jobs, anywhere in canada, first place i always look is workopolis.com

calgary cost of living, comparable to most cities in canada... the thing i like here is there is no PST (an extra 8% on anything you buy)... on average, most people with families that i know who rent are quite comfortably well off in about $2k per month... the thing is, rent in calgary is quite cheap compared to toronto (or even ottawa)... you can get a very decent 2 bedroom fourplex for about $650 per month... most places include gas and water.... a 2 bedroom apartment in the heart of downtown goes for about $800 per month including uitlities...

as for how easy it is to get a job, well different people have different experiences... odd jobs are fairly easy to come by i am told... professional jobs may be more difficult, specially if you are a computer professional, as the IT market here in alberta is fairly oil and gas specific...

property is still quite affordable here, depending on where you want to buy a house, and how old of a house you want... a new home in the southwest ranges from $190k to $500k depending on how big it is and what features are attached...

all in all, i love it here...

well, I have to agree with mr. bighead since I live in Calgary myself.

Me and my wife moved to Calgary from the US in early 2000 to work in Calgary and subsequently emigrated while living here. There are lots of jobs in the Oil and Gas sector but a few ones in Computers if you have the right qualifications. There are tons of odd jobs available since the city is growing like crazy.

There is a fairly large Desi community here with two temples, restuarants and if you are south-indian a dosa place opened up recently (Yippee!).

The people in this City are nice and friendly even when the temperatures starting dipping under -30C.

But in the end, you can't beat the rocky mountains. They just rock. I have hiked in the mountains for almost 4 summers now and I have just covered only a tiny bit of the rockies. I hope to spend atleast another 10 years or the rest of the my life hiking in the rockies.

Go Flames Go!
