Hi

What are the local transportation facilities within Calgary?

Also, are temp. accomodations easily available for new immigrants, and how to go about to land a job (maybe odd job initially) in Calgary?

Is Nov/Dec OK to land in Calgary for the first time?

Kindly let me know.

Thanx

well, I have to agree with mr. bighead since I live in Calgary myself.

Me and my wife moved to Calgary from the US in early 2000 to work in Calgary and subsequently emigrated while living here. There are lots of jobs in the Oil and Gas sector but a few ones in Computers if you have the right qualifications. There are tons of odd jobs available since the city is growing like crazy.

There is a fairly large Desi community here with two temples, restuarants and if you are south-indian a dosa place opened up recently (Yippee!).

The people in this City are nice and friendly even when the temperatures starting dipping under -30C.

But in the end, you can't beat the rocky mountains. They just rock. I have hiked in the mountains for almost 4 summers now and I have just covered only a tiny bit of the rockies. I hope to spend atleast another 10 years or the rest of the my life hiking in the rockies.

Go Flames Go!

busses and the ctrain... all in all, the city is fairly well connected by public transit.. and the ctrain is completely pollution free (runs on wind generated power i think)... the trains cover the four quadrants, and busses run perpendicular to the trains... ive heard its not too expensive, but then i only use the ctrain in the downtown core to go from one client to another (in the downtown core, the ctrain is free)... ive been on the bus once, and it was fairly good...

finding a place to rent is not difficult... as for temp accomadation, im not sure... if you mean hotels/motels, then there are plenty of them... when we first moved to calgary, we stayed in a downtown hotel for about 10 days while our duplex was being upgraded... i was able to find a rental house in four hours using the local paper (but i had done a little bit of research as to which general area i wanted to live in before i came here)... the hotel we stayed in was pretty pricy though, but im sure you would be able to find something a little more reasonable, as cost wasnt a concern for me during our initial hotel stay (one of my clients was footing the bill :-))...

as for jobs, again different people have different experiences... but there are a lot of odd jobs available... pretty much every single fast food joint in the SW of the city has help wanted signs...

it starts snowing in december... its not freakishly cold (that happens in january :-))... if you land in nov/dec be prepared for a weather shocker...

Hi all,

I am landing in Calgary on 22nd August.

I intend to search for a computer sales job so if anybody on CD can help me, it would be really great. Also, what are prospects for such a job? I have experience selling Microsoft, Citrix, Corel, Computer Associates, etc. software.

It gets very cold in winter, goes to -30 to -35 degrees centigrade, my friends in Calgary tell me.

yeah things are cheaper in Calgary compared to Toronto, Vancouver.

What about Indian store in Calgary?

Thanks & rgds.

If things are cheaper in Calgary (or Alberta as a whole), does it also mean that salaries are lower too as compared to Toronto or Vancouver?

How do people go about their daily lives in the thick of winters?

Is Alberta only good for certain professions?

How big is the Desi community? Do they have desi associations in Calgary/Edmonton?

Canada's 6th largest city: population of more than 640,000. It is 3rd largest FIRE (Finance, Insurance, Real Estate cluster and includes 4800 businesses, employing over 23,500 people in above industries). The Greater Toronto's FIRE sector including Mississauga is 3rd largest in North America and amongst largest in the world. The employment in the FIRE sector in the city of Mississauga, is conservatively projected to increase from 23,500 to 32,325 by the end of 2007, achieving 50% increase.

Other facts:

Mississauga's nominal GDP, for 2002, was projected at over $ 30 billion, of which the FIRE sector's direct GDP contribution was estimated at $5.9 billion or almost 20%.

Mississauga is within a one-day drive of North America's biggest and richest market of more than 400 million people.

Average Household income is $65000 per annum, above both provincial and national averages.

Mississauga is also the safest city to live in Ontario with lowest crime rates.

Over 45,000 businesses and over 387,000 employees. (over 2.9 million employees in the GTA)

52 of Fortune 500 Canadian head offices.1,500 multinational firms.

Key business sectors: Biomedical/ Pharmaceutical, FIRE, Consumer Products, Information Technology, Automotive, Aerospace and Financial Services.

Over 82.35 per cent of Mississauga's resident labour force has post-secondary education.

Home to Pearson International Airport, Canada's largest airport.

Only city in the GTA, with access to seven major highways.

A well-developed local transit system and two principle railways traversing the city.

Telecommunication: 100 per cent digital switching using state of art technology. Major centre for successful call centres.

Cultural diversity: It's diversity of linguistics and high degree of cultural integration makes Mississauga a primary location of choice for back office operation, for all sectors.

There are very few Indians in the interior towns. In the town i am there must be only 1 % indians. No Indian grocery,No temple and 99% goras. Nearest city is 500 kms away. My friend here has got depressed and wants to go back to toronto but is scared of getting back to the labour job rut. The temperature goes to -40 Degc in winter.

I understand about the winter (i was born & raised in the prairies) .. it sounds like rather than the lack of indians ..the isolation and sparse population is what bothered ur friend??
