Hello everyone,

I have been thinking about it for a long time and I thought this would be a best place to find like minded people.

Idea/ Plan: I lived in Canada for 7 years and now in Seattle (not very far from Surrey,BC) and i have found out that lot of us have lots of clothes that we do not use anymore.

Some of us give it to Salvation army and some take it to India and distribute there. That what we also do depending upon what kind of clothes it is.

But still there is so much left with us that we do not want to give it to Salvation because we know that it would be of no use.... specially indian dresses sherwanis, Suits, saris etc. and everytime we pack our bags we have to leave clothes like that for next time because we have other important stuff to take with us (gifts etc.).

These clothes can be used effectively... I have been talking to lot of people in India itself, and every part of the country have such unfortunate kids, seniors, adults that might use these clothes.

What I am planning to do is that we need two types of people one who can volunteer some time collect these clothes at one location it could be multiple in number one in brampton, one in mississauga, surrey everywhere and than we have to look for people who are willing to take it with them to India. doesnot matter where they are going. As I said everypart have some institutions that might need these clothes.

For now I consider myself as one of the people who can collect clothes is there anyone who is willing to take it to india? I can come to Surrey Vancouver also to deliver that.

Any suggestions to make it better? No cash is required.. just unused items.
thanks.

pl Throw your used cloth in to a dust bin .You may send money to one of the many NGOs that can take of your job.
I suggest you to give the needy what exactly you really like to wear now or exactly what you dream to wear if you are under privilised. None would like to wear someone's used cloth-unless it is a mazburi.
If you really want to serve some one , do it silently - not knowing to your left hand , and not with your left overs.

My suggestion would be for new cloths , and like to participate if is for new cloths.

Have you realized that how many people survive on leftovers ... And so many of them are not even LUCKY enough to even get leftovers ...
Its a good idea if one can send money but sending your stuff that is not being used by yourself can even save life ..

hi guys, first of all I would like to thank all for participating. I liked the idea of involving Embassy. I would look into it for sure.

arjunca79 : I agree with you but it's not something impossible to do. Some people might come forward. so I have not dropped the Idea yet. suggestions liek these would lead somewhere. That's how everything starts.

Rajuu : I was wondering what country you are from? Are you from India? We have people in our country that do not have enough to cover their body. It's so nice of you that you are willing to donate new clothes... but how many new clothes can you donate.... and how many people would come forward to donate new clothes? and how many people would come forward to donate Old clothes... just do the math...

If you want you can still donate new clothes.. some one would get it for sure.

Anyway, Ashwani G also have replied nicely about this.

Good news is that my parents are here and I'll be sending my first shipment of clothes to be donated in Feb'2007. Someone also told me that if we can also post this information on craigslist.com, there are lot of needy people who would love to get used clothes for free.

I am sure it will expand. thanks again!

I can join the club. Just a week ago I with one of my friend sent 1.3 cqmt shipment of used clothes to India thro a logistic co in Brampton. It coasted (if am correct) aprx $400.00. Pl. does contact me or send me a PM and we can go from there. My friend knows a person who has been doing it for years. This person was sending thro churches but now we want it to send directly to some trusts, orphanages etc. All suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

A good idea. You have to know where the fruits of your well intentioned efforts are going.
I was reading(will post link if I find it) about rings in Africa who get loads of used items from european countries. Some of the goods are sold in the local market. This has not only destroyed the local garment industry and the jobs therein but some of the items have made their way back into europe via ebay :).
Sending it directly does not totally prevent the problems but maybe it minimizes it to some extent.
