Hello,
Single Entry Visa is generally valid for SIX months from the date of entry. You can enter and leave from St-Pierre Miquelon or the USA without counting the entries. See website. The immigration officer at the POE will tell you and then stamp the passport with the date, generally valid for six months. You also have the chance of renewing it for a like period, prior to the expiry of its validity.
To have Multiple entry Visa and utilise it, the Passport must be valid for the duration of that particular Visa. So, keep your passport renewed and valid prior to applying for the Visa.
Ask for the number of years that you wish to have a multiple entry visa. You will have to pay the fees and undergo any and all of the requirements that they will need and look for, and provide them with financial status, the age and health questionaire and complete the medicals and all the other formalities that they will ask the applicant to do and provide with. The Immigration officer then decides if they can issue with one for such a period.
They will also require that you have an insurance policy in place for the duration of that visa or an undertaking from the local support that you will be totally responsible for His/her {their} welfare during their stay here in Canada, covering all of the pre-existing conditions and if it requires monitoring, with a record of such, as conducted by a local Physician, to be provided to them upon request.
Hope this helps.
Freddie.
