Hi All,

The discussions seems to be not going on right track. TK is a mature person and I have read a tons of constructive posts from TK but it is very difficult to appreciate the post from TK which has created furore.

It is not a question of north or south Indians and the trend has no linkages. In every state in India one can find learned persons who are fluent in English. Racist remarks are unwelcome in the forum. I agree that one can find lots and lots of Tamils in Toronto who knows nothing about English. If you go to Tamilnadu though people know Hindi but pretend that they know nothing about Hindi and they once challenged their union with Indian republic.

This is multicultural forum and one should desist from biased and racist comments.

If you are including Ahmedabad, Mumbai & Delhi in non-english speaking city then I would suggest you should really think about your existence in this world. I do know that you are a Tamil speaking person & you are very proud of that, but please don’t show your racist feelings on this website.

I can show you lacs of Tamils in Toronto who cannot speak a word in English even after coming to Canada. But according to us we think that you are also INDIANS & we never try to offend other desis on an open forum of discussion or in public.

To check the English literacy in south, pls call the ICICI call center in south India & try to talk with them…….

It is people like you who make generalisations like "lacs of Tamils in Toronto ..." etc; that come to Canada and continue spouting the same things that you did back home that are a shame to the Indo-Canadian community here.

And you are the one who's condescending when you say "according to us we think that you are also INDIANS ..."

** I hereby request the moderator of this forum to take necessary actions……. blah, blah, blah

And i thought its Punjab that tops the list of migrating to west esp UK Canada and USA and South Indians top the list of migration to Middle East!
Why do we always start bashing up each other for something which usually doesnt hold much water!!!
Knowing or NOT knowing good english is a debatable topic and we all have right to put forth our views as per our own knowledge/experiences.I am sure TK didn't mean to sound offensive as he has not done that in any of his posts.
I myself was of the impression that North Indians have Neutral Accent but with less percentage of english speaking population as compared to higher percentage of english speaking population in south but with Thick Accent. Please correct me if I am wrong!

How does it matter here in Canada? Many Canadians think all Indians wear turbans and come fom the Punjab! Some of them are not even aware of how many states there are in India and about its cultural diversity.
The most imp thing for you to do once you land here is to "integrate". To try and get rid of your indian accent by taking accent-reduction courses, for instance. It is usually difficult to do this as an adult, but one could try. One could surely try to speak Canadian English in an intelligible manner.

I have a different opinion on this. There is no accent which can be called as 'Indian Accent' reason being the number of languages spoken in India and hence diversity of english accent within the country. If you have a neutral accent, you don't need to takeup any Accent reduction course. Integration does not imply that you 'Get Rid' of your own self to be successful! Instead it is combining parts into whole. If you can speak in an accent that is understandable and correct grammatically you are in.
I am yet to meet such Canadians who think all Indians are Punjabis...its 2008 and people know a lot more about India than they did in 1980s. Forget about Candians not knowing states of India, how many Indians are aware of the facts and figures about India!!!

Could this be a typo and they meant $1000 per month? That sounds a bit more reasonable.

This "canadian parliment and country's missions" sounds like something written by someone who has no clue what they are talking about !

I apologize to any one who thinks that I made racist comments but the truth is (if you read my post carefuly) that in no point in time that I made any comments which were racists. People who have read my earlier posts would no dobut come to a conclusion that I actually bash the tamils for their short comings. Some Tamil CD's have even distanced themselves from me b'cos I speak very badly about Tamils for their mistakes/ ignorance. However that does not mean that Tamils donot know English. All TN tamils know english and I would wonder many time when I used to even see beggers in Madras use more English words than Tamil for begging. They generally use "Sir", "Please" etc... I wonder at the ignorance of the posters who claimed that they have seen lot of Tamils in Toronto not able to speak English. Thay might have met Tamils who come from Outside of Tamil nadu.
It is a fact that not many Tamils know Hindi and they just used the time (that they would otherwise have used to learn Hindi) to learn / polish their skills on English.

Peace
