Check this video of the Lingo Kid.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PrleqeCAPw
And this guy is a begger from bombay.. does this mean all the people in bombay can speak many languages.. No really These people are constantly in touch with tourists hence they speak English.. I was visiting the Taj Mahal in 2002 and was shocked at the accent in which the beggers were speaking english..
I personally think in india where ever there is focus on education people speak good english regardless of which part of the country they are from.

People who have read my earlier posts would no dobut come to a conclusion that I actually bash the tamils for their short comings. Some Tamil CD's have even distanced themselves from me b'cos I speak very badly about Tamils for their mistakes/ ignorance. However that does not mean that Tamils donot know English. All TN tamils know english and I would wonder many time when I used to even see beggers in Madras use more English words than Tamil for begging. They generally use "Sir", "Please" etc... I wonder at the ignorance of the posters who claimed that they have seen lot of Tamils in Toronto not able to speak English. Thay might have met Tamils who come from Outside of Tamil nadu.
It is a fact that not many Tamils know Hindi and they just used the time (that they would otherwise have used to learn Hindi) to learn / polish their skills on English.
Peace
I appreciate TK's view that people from South India speak English more than people from other parts of India because Hindi was never first or second language in most of the southern states. Things got changed since a decade. Multinational corporate culture crept in India and English was prioritized in most of the places. Fluency in English was the gatekeeper to respectable private sector jobs. South Indians speaking English has an accent which sometimes is not marketable in Canada.
I wonder why we still harbour feeling of regionalism once we are in Canada and we are behaving like Raj Thakre. World becomes one in Toronto. Live and let live. Om shati Om.
