This forum mainly brings in experiences, questions, answers, expectations, frustrations of both existing and intending immigrants. Little do we realise that there might be people who regularly visit this site with no intentions and expectations of moving to Canada - or for that matter any foreign land. This is that sector of population, and a really large one at that, who subconsiously think of life in a foreign land, especially, the west, but dare not dream of ever taking any step further.......for many reasons! This I would term as a desire in the subconsious - something that the person is not really fully aware of himself, but it exists somewhere in the mind. In Hindi, I call it, ek dabi hui si chaah!

Last month I received an e-mail from a person who wrote that she regularly visits CD and reads various posting and suddenly felt like communicating with me. She might have done with many others too, but she did not mention that. She was truthful enough to say that she comes from a middle class family with husband in a government job and she herself in some other ordinary job. Nothing extra-ordinary in life and nothing expected too. However, while surfing on CDesi, she felt the desire to ask herself if it is somehow possible for her to come to Canada!!! She says, she has absolutely no contacts overseas and has never thought of getting out of India - but surfing the net has developed an interest in her about Canada. She does not know whether if it atall possible for her to even think of migrating - let alone think where to start from.

An ordinary life led by so many Indians - but a knowledge that the west has it all!

This mail made me think a lot in last one month. Is or isn't it this kind of people who should try for migration to canada? One thought is, people leading ordinary lives cannot deal with the hardships of migration to a foreign land, and our advice to them should be stright to the point of saying - no use thinking in this direction.

The other thought is - isn't this exactly what Canada needs? People who do not have high ambitions and expectations and who are ready to come here and work to finally have a better quality of life than they are presently leading in India. For such people, life would definitely be really better than back home - as is for so many Indians coming from villages of India on family migration who cannot even speak English, let alone using internet to surf and know about the world. Isn't this the kind of people who if they migrate, could create a win-win situation both for themselves and Canada? Educated, but not highly, hardworking but not with great ambitions, not westernised but English speaking.........etc. etc.?

For me, it was very thought provoking subject and that is why I kept it to myself for about a month, and putting forward as my landmark 200th posting. I invite comments from forum members what they feel about this subject, and if you were asked about this from this lady, what your reply to her would be.

The only question you can ask She / He should be, How desperate you are to move out from your home country ??? It is as simple as that.
Rest, whether it works for them or not only time & their performance will decide.

My Congrats for your 200th post, You have been a great help to Desis &

Best wishes & Luck to you.

Deep regards,

1942 - India witnessed one of the biggest struggels for Independence the world has ever known.... The Quit India Movement.

1994 - The new avatar of the 'Quit India movement" where people started migrating in droves from India to the US (Dot Com Boom).

If everybody in India was to start thinking of Migrating to Canada to get a "Better Life Style", in about ten years time, we'll end up with two countries that would be almost mirror images of each other :p

You're back Chandresh :) . Though we dont agree on every thing I've found almost every post of yours sincere and borne out of your own analysis of situations. I always see an effort to understand and make yourself understood in almost each of your posts. Most of them are fertile fodder for my humble mind even If it is only to figure out why exactly I dont agree with you. A perfect excuse for me to ramble too.

Like I said we dont see things the same way so I had to first understand where you are coming from. In the above para you ask yourself and us:
if what Canada really needs are these people ...sans ambitions etc. So I guess this this means that you have concluded, that a lot of ambitious and deserving people who come here do not get the jobs that they deserve. Thus logically, Canada does not need them but need less talented and ambitious people to fulfill its needs. However before we draw those conclusions I think we should also ask the following questions and answer them first.
Lets say we have this highly experienced/talented/educated immigrant ,who like a lot of people, is having difficulty finding a job in his/her field
1) Are there no jobs In canada that our candidate can apply for? I think there are plenty of good jobs. And everyone agrees on that right? If not then your conclusions are accurate.
If there indeed are good jobs that our unlucky friend can apply for then...

2) Are all the jobs, that our candidate is rejected for, being left vacant?
3) If not are these jobs then being filled in by people who have lesser to offer and cheaper than our candidate? In this case Canada cannot be the G7 country(it is). So if these lesser applicants cannot perform their duties the jobs will come on the market again. Sooner or later.
4) Is it realistic to expect that each and every immigrant gets a job that they think they deserve. Does it work that way anywhere in the world?
Even in India (though most of us here have had led privileged lives back in India) you do see scores of people come to the metros and start their lives all over. There are more failures than successes there too. The better equipped climb faster always. Sometimes its as simple as being born to the correct family. Fair? Lifes not fair.
e.g: Back home, I knew that due to my privileged upbringing, i was better equipped to succeed.
Similarly, most of the people who are here via the skilled immigrant/family category, have already had a lifestyle beyond the imagination of a majority of the people in the world.

I've never been to Singapore but can you just migrate to Singapore without holding a local job first? If you go to any country without a job in hand, is it not true that a person would have to start almost from scratch and makie compromises to start with?

I often meet old timers from India who arrived in Canada the 70's and 80's and were able to find jobs for the taking. That probably changed with the flux of the global economy and the increased immigration to this country. So inorder to succeed an immigrant now has to do more than he/she would in the 70's. The sad part is not everyone will make it. Unfair? Probably. Lifes not fair. :D . It works both ways.

What I am trying to get at, is it that Canada does not have the need for ambitious and hardworking people?
OR
is it that some are not able to find jobs that they think they deserve? That they have to push themselves even more than they previously thought they had to?
So ultimately is it really about Canada at all?

If the positions were reversed and India needed immigrants( that would be the day :D ), and If I had anything to do with selecting immigrants...I would surely look for people who had more chances of success and were better equipped than aim for people who would merely fit the bill and be happy with whatever was given. In the long run I would look what would benefit India more than an individual. Unfortunately, as always, some people will get hurt in the bargain.

My answer to the lady...do a lot of research and find out if you think it is right for you. I do not think any of us on this forum or the world can say if moving to Canada is right for someone else. The best we can do is help with parts of the whole, like we do now.
BUT, once she is here my advice would be**make it right for you**...very often that means working on oneself than looking outside.

Ca va bien Jake?
Its a matter of perspective.
Although people would say they have ordinary lives wouldnt tantamount to not having ambitions...
Many factors should be taken into consideration b4 one who's never thought of emigrating into thinking otherwise.
You are right one has to do the right research but the equation goes haywire if one is not blessed with additional funds to undergo this trail.
Please do also think about the permutation and combination of how many applicants to how many jobs. Its already bad in most sectors now.
Im sure you will agree its not as easy as ordering vadapav..immigration takes 3 yrs on an average and things can be very different when you land.

pas mal, bumbaya.

I agree with what you say infact you repeated what I did in talking about jobs to people ratio. The thing that I pointed out that none of those few good jobs are going vacant. They are being filled. By some people. Some by desis others not. One has to work harder at those jobs...look at the post landing experiences thread for an account about my friend who has been able to find good jobs after beeing laid off 3 times in the past 4 yrs.

It was bad 8 yrs ago too. My personal experiences attest to that.

Call me slow, but since you addressed me, what exactly are you trying to say? If you were trying to tell me something at all.
