BTW, you can not see Timing belt without opening the casing - if you are doing that then might as well change it.

That is surprisingly but very welcome news!!!. Can I have the contact? I got to change for two cars, both Camry 97 and both around 190K. However, I had got one changed (from the Toyota dealer) at 95K, so should I wait some more time because they say it can go upto 120k after one change. That would mean I should get that one done at about 215k?

When I had got it done at 95K the dealer had told me that it should be done at 90K.

Thanks Maharaj for passing on the contact. I actually tried today at 3 mechanics shops around Dundas-Mavis area (since I woe up late today- Around 11;00 am) and with me supplying the parts and getting an oil change also done, they quoted :
1. $ 750 labour alone + Oil change
2. $ 450 " "
3. $ 350 " "

The $ 350 guy told me that he coudl not do it today. so I called up and drove straight to Maharaj's mechanic. They are men of a few words but very busy. But they repair quickly and send people out.
Hope you guys are aware that I had a check engine light on ( Code 117 on a Mazda) and though I paid 4 times for check engine light charge (each time between $ 20 - $ 40), no one could zero in on what was exactly wrong. Once chinese mechanic in Kitchener told me (without doing the check engine light diagnosis), that it was the Oxygen sensor and that Mazda has 2 oxygen sensors and that no one could find which one was wrong and so we had to replace both (he quoted both to be $ 440+ tax + labour).
Last week I drove to Buffalo and in Buffalo, check engine light diagnosis is free in all spare parts shop. They ran the check engine light diagnosis and found out FREE for me that the first Oxygen sensor was the one that failed.
So I bought the following at Buffalo which has just 6 % state tax.
1. Oxygen sensor - US $ 150
2. Timing Belt - US $ 29
3. Water Pump - US $ 50.
The mechanics (that Maharaj had recommended) charged $ 250 - Cash (incl. Oil change) and the car runs like a fiddle. I left the car for around 3 hrs. 15 mins. in the garage.
Always call and ask if they are free to do it and then do it. The chief mechanic (after the ride) takes it for a drive (with the client) and personally sees that the car is running smoothly.
Thanks Maharaj and USA !

Peace by TK

Funny but true - I had gone to Maharaj recommanded mechanic for same two problems as TK (timing belt and engine light). While they quoted around 450 or so for timing belt, they were not very sure what was the exact problem for engine light (sensor - but which one, whether oxygen or something else). Have driven the car for about a year after that, and now that the inspection is due next month, will have to finally get this fixed.

So Maharaj, can you please send me the contacts again for the guy? Thanks!

Chandresh ,

Its possible that the guy may not be a fully equipped pro but can repair an already diagnosed problem cheaply ... I recall some one had once recommended that get your car diagnosed by a good mechanic but get the job done else where ...

As for your inspection , I was in the same shoes as yours last month .... Canadian Tire refused to inspect the car as the engine light was on ... a mechanic reset the code , engine light was gone and I got the emission test done @ a garage near Martingrove & Belfield ... Will let you know the contact .... The car passed the emission test and I got my sticker the same day .
